Garmin Nuvi 260 GPSWow - what a cool GPS!. For Christmas, we got a Garmin Nuvi 260 GPS for use in our cars and RV and it is really fantastic. Since we have been using it I haven't made a U-turn (prior to this I made at least one and usually 2 U-turns), haven't stopped at multiple gas stations for directions, and haven't had to yell at the wife to hurry up and find the route on the map (typically by the time she finds it, we are two miles past the turn!). Bottom line, we have saved gas, minimized our time on the road, and can continue to maintain our "happily married" relationship.

The Gamin Nuvi 260 is a very compact unit (2.8" tall, 3.8" wide, and .8" deep) and the screen is 3.5" diagonally with large easy to read text and maps - meaning us old folks can see the directions from more than one foot away. Because it is so small and compact, it can fit easily in my pocket or my wife's purse making it perfect for moving from car to RV and back. We also bought a small carrying case to help protect the unit, store the extras, and make it easily transportable.

In addition to being small and easy to read, the text-to-speech feature that announces the distance to your next turn and other information is clear, understandable, and loud enough (even with the windows open) that it doesn't require me to turn on the hearing aid.

Plus, the Garmin Nuvi 260 includes a simple and easy to understand getting-started manual that isn't 200 pages long and filled with jargon that only a teenager would understand. And the touch-screen interface makes it easy to get different views of the map, find a point of interest, look up a business and get directions, and much more. It's so easy, you can operate it out of the box without even reading the manual. Was this unit designed for old folks?

Some of the other things we like about the Nuvi 260 include:

  • very fast signal acquisition as well as very accurate route calculation
  • trip information including estimated time of arrival, speed, compass, odometer, and more
  • route planning and re-routing plus "avoid area" routing
  • turn by turn navigation
  • 3D map view plus display of approaching cross streets
  • compact mounting bracket for the windshield or the dash
  • long 5 hour battery life from a 3-4 hour charge
