Abilene

Abilene is rich with Texas history and owes its beginning to the Texas & Pacific Railroad. Before the coming of the railroad, the Abilene area was inhabited by nomadic Indians and hundres of thousands of buffalo. The United States military moved in followed by the buffalo hunters and ranchers. The city was established by cattlemen as a stock shipping point on the Texas and Pacific Railway in 1881 and was named after Abilene, Kansas. At Abilene's Frontier Texas you can experience some of that history from 1780 to 1880.

Today, Abilene offers a little bit of everything from an outstanding history museum to historic villages to a well done Zoo to a contemorary art center. You can camp, fish, hunt, or golf.

And you can't leave Abilene without singing this at least once - "Abilene, Abilene prettiest town that I've ever seen; women there don't treat you mean in Abilene, sweet Abilene!"
