Tanglewood Resort & Conference center is an excellent location for a fun weekend (or longer) golfing excursion. Tanglewood is located on a bluff above beautiful Lake Texoma and is less than a two hour drive from Dallas or the DFW Airport. The resort offers a number of amenities and a very good championship golf course.

The Golf Course

Tanglewood golf course was designed by Arnold Palmer and renowned architect Ralph Plummer and was completed in 1973. During the latter part of the summer of 2007, the course was renovated with new greens with Diamond Zoysia grass, which is noted for its fine texture and excellent putting surface. Along with the greens, all of the bunkers were redone and white sand was added - although they are really nice, you should still to do everything you can to avoid these new bunkers.

This par 72 championship course has 5 sets of tee boxes and ranges from 6993 yards from the tips to 4925 from the front tee box. The rating ranges from 68.3 (white tee box) to 73.5 from the tips and has a slope of 111 to 128. All of this means that based on your skill level and desire to challenge yourself, you'll find a set of tee boxes that will accommodate you.

The course takes advantage of the terrain and some holes are flat and others go both down and back up some gentle hills. All of the fairways are fairly narrow and tree lined, however all but a few of the fairways and rough are wide enough that the trees will only cause you a problem if you hit a big slice or hook. When we last played Tanglewood, the fairways were in very good condition and the rough along side the fairways was cut fairly thick. Most of the holes are fairly straight, which allows you to see the pin any potential trouble.

We played right after the course had reopened after renovating the new greens and bunkers. The greens needed more time to mature, so we can't provide a fair critique of the greens. Based on what we experienced, given some time to mature, you may find these greens to be some of the best in Texas. The greens were a little larger than normal, had some minor undulation, and a little slope.

You'll find water on 7 holes and on a couple of holes the water causes a very tough approach shot. There are some memorable and pretty holes. Tanglewood, like most resort courses, was designed to be somewhat challenging but fair to ensure that the resort golfers have a pleasant and enjoyable round of golf. You should enjoy playing this course and you'll want to play it again.

In addition to an excellent 18 holes of golf, Tanglewood has a complete pro shop; snack bar with burgers, sandwiches, and more; driving range; putting green; and banquet room above the pro shop. Green fees are average for this quality course and the Resort offers a number of attractive Stay & Play Packages. You can read the Texas Outside review of Tanglewood Golf Course by clicking here.

If you are staying longer than a weekend or want to play some other courses in the area, you have some excellent choices. About 15 minutes south of Tanglewood is Northern Challenge which is a very fun course to play. If you only have time for nine holes, head across the lake to Buncombe Creek. If you want to gamble then golf, try the Windstar Casino course. Chickasaw Pointe, on the Oklahoma side of the lake, is a fantastic course if you like challenges, elevation changes, narrow fairways, and beautiful views of the lake and surrounding countryside. Across the highway from Chickasaw Pointe is Lake Texoma State Park's 18 hole course, which is a good value and fun course to play. Sherman and Dennison also have a couple courses which we have not played. The Resort

Tanglewood can accommodate you and an additional 200 of your friends, family, or other golf buddies! They have a variety of accommodations that can sleep from two to six or more. There are standard hotel rooms, very cool Tower Suites, and fully equipped Villas.

The Tower Suites are perfect for a romantic getaway or a weekend escape with your spouse or girl/boyfriend. The Suites have three balconies, one per side, with fantastic views of the hills, resort, marina, and Lake Texoma. The rooms are larger than standard rooms, nicely appointed, and even have a claw-footed tub to soak out some golf kinks. Check out Tanglewood's "Wine & Roses Sweetheart Package" which includes the room, breakfast, plus champagne or wine, a fruit basket, and fresh roses placed in your room prior to your arrival. All of that is bound to win you some points and lasting memories! If your favorite friend is not a golfer, not a problem, they can enjoy the pools, jacuzzi, or spa. Or head into Sherman or Dennison for shopping.

The tower has an observation deck on the top which provides magnificent 360 panoramic views of the lake, hills, and marina. Make sure that before you head out for golf, you head to the top of the tower for some Starbucks coffee to get your juices flowing. And after your round, it doesn't get any better than cocktails in the tower, with a great sunset, and some good stories about how you could have scored better, why you missed that two foot putt, etc.

The hotel rooms are in a five story building and most have two double beds, bathroom and shower, table, coffee pot, and TV. Some of the rooms have excellent views of the hills and Lake Texoma.

If you're going golfing with family or other couples or just some good friends, check out the Villas. They are outstanding - fully furnished, 1100 to 1500 square feet, one or two bedrooms, and include a fully equipped kitchen, very nicely appointed living dinning and living area with a fireplace, TV, DVD, and stereo. They are perfect for 6 people and include everything you need to cook a great dinner after golf.

Some of the other amenities at Tanglewood include:
