San Saba River RV Park Overview:

Located along the banks of the San Saba River and under some stately pecan and oak trees about two miles from downtown San Saba is a small RV park that is perfect for a getaway or a camp and play golf weekend.

San Saba River RV Park is owned and operated by the City of San Saba and opened in 2008.  Some of the sites are on a bank overlooking the small San Saba River, others are nestled under tall pecans and oaks, and a few are open.

The Park is located next to the fun and scenic San Saba River Golf Course and they offer a reasonable Golf Stay & Play Package.

The main road through the park and campsite is not paved but if firm and wide enough for big rigs to easily maneuver into any of the sites.

San Saba River RV Park is a work in progress and improvements and additions are continuously being made.  For example, a new clubhouse was recently built and four new sites were added to the Park and the City is still making improvements as dollars become available.

Amenities and Fun Things To Do:

San Saba River RV Park has 33 sites that are a combination of back-in and pull through.  Each of the sites has 20/30/50 AMP service, cable, and water hookups.  All but four of the sites have concrete patio and parking pads that are perfectly level.  The sites range from open to well shaded under some large pecan and oak trees.   All of the sites are long enough for the biggest rigs as well as a towed vehicle and they offer some breathing room with grass between each site - you don't get a cramped feeling like you do at some RV parks.  Some of the sites have picnic tables.

A brand new clubhouse was recently finished and it is home to a laundry room, restrooms, dinning area and full kitchen, plus a great room with comfy couches, a satellite TV, and game tables.

The restrooms are fantastic - each one is private and has a sink, toilet, and shower and all were spotless when we visited.

Nestled under the trees is an open pavilion and adjacent to it is a large fire pit that is perfect for sitting around roasting marshmallows and telling ghost stories.

If you like to fish, then just a few steps from some of the RV sites is the San Saba River and we were told it has some huge catfish just waiting for you.

A Typical Texas Outsider Day:

We had heard a couple good comments about the San Saba River Golf Course, so we decided to check it out and spend the night in the RV park on our way to a music festival in Llano.

We loved the RV park - quiet, peaceful, scenic, and well maintained - as well as the golf course.  San Saba River Golf Course is a fun track that is challenging but fair, with reasonable rates, an excellent pace of play, and some fun holes.  Read our review of San Saba River Golf Course to learn more.

Unfortunately we didn't have time to explore San Saba before heading out of town.  We hope to return in the near future.

Cool Nearby Activities:

San Saba River RV Park is located about two miles from the Pecan Capital of The World, which offers a wide variety of delicious pecan treats at a variety of different stores close to downtown.  The city has three public parks, the golf course, an historic downtown shopping district, and excellent fishing and hunting in the countryside surrounding it.

Mill Pond Park is a lovely park with a spring-fed lake and a man-made swimming pool. A waterfall cascades over rocks landscaped with ferns, moss, canna and caladium.  The park is also home to baseball fields, tennis courts, a playground, a beach volleyball court, basketball courts, an all-weather track, and nature trails.

There are some local restaurants and we heard that Diggs Restaurant was the place to go for steaks and a cold beer.  Visit the San Saba website to learn more about things to see and do.

Within an hour or two there are plenty of fun things to see and do, some of which include:

  • play any of several great golf courses - see this golf course map
  • shop and explore the quaint Fredericksburg
  • rent a boat, hire a fishing guide, or just picnic on the banks of Inks Lake, Lake Buchanan, or Lake LBJ - read our reviews of any of these lakes to find things to see and do on the lake
  • visit Colorado Bend State Park and float, fish, or swim in the Colorado River
  • head down to Llano (25 minutes south) and play in the Llano River, have some BBQ at the famous Coopers BBQ, or enjoy some of the shops, restaurants, or lively bars

Texas Outside Campground Rating System

Texas Outside uses a tough rating scale and it’s difficult for a campground to get a “10”.  Each park is rated on:

  • Scenic Beauty: a campground that is flat with no trees or character gets a “1” and hills, lots of trees, beautiful lake site, and lush ground cover gets a “10”
  • Park Condition:  the cleaner, well kept, and maintained campgrounds receive high scores
  • Amenities: we are looking for lots of amenities like restrooms, dump stations, playgrounds, boat ramps, shelters, concession stand, rental toys, and more.
  • Campsites:  low scores are given for sites that are right next to each other (good for getting to know your neighbors, but not what we’re looking for when we’re camping); have no lantern holder, no water or electricity, no fire pit, no grill, or no picnic table (or it’s rotten wood); have no trees and no view; the ground cover is crushed rock (my bare feet hate that stuff!); and they require a lot of work to get your rig level.
  • Things To Do: Bonus points are given for campgrounds that offer lots of fun things to do at the park or very nearby – this includes: biking, hiking, climbing, boating, entertainment, golf, swimming, fishing, volleyball, horseshoes, and more
