Corpus Christi has an estimated population of 285,175 which makes it the eighth-largest city in the state. The Port of Corpus Christi, which is the sixth largest U.S. port and deepest inshore port on the Gulf of Mexico, handles mostly oil and agricultural products. Much of the local economy is driven by tourism and the oil & petrochemicals industry. In 2005 Corpus was ranked as the 47th largest in the world by cargo tonnage. As one of the most popular tourist destinations on the Gulf Coast, the population swells by thousands as visitors and Winter Texans come to fish, bird watch, boat, golf, hunt, enjoy the many restaurants and nightclubs, and to get some beach time.
