Brief Overview:
The Vineyards Campground on Lake Grapevine is an outstanding campground and in a perfect location if you want to explore Grapevine or the Dallas Fort Worth area. The Vineyards was previously a Corp of Engineers Park known as Silver Lake Campground. In October 2002 the City of Grapevine leased the land from the Corp of Engineers and spent over $2 million on improvements in 2006 -- and it shows. The campground is in excellent condition, clean, and is very well maintained. We visited the park in November 2006 during the drought and the water level was down 13 or more feet and the boat ramp was closed. But when the lake is at capacity, the water will be very close to the sites and make this one of our favorite campgrounds in Texas. One of the reasons that The Vineyards is a top rated park is because they never sit still and are constantly making improvements. In 2010, they are adding 17 new RV sites, 7 new cabins with one being a duplex, a camp store, and new landscaping. Projected completion date to be October 1. Pictures are being posted on their blog on their website.
Amenities and Fun Things To Do:
One of the great things about The Vineyards is that they offer a variety of camping options - cabins; tent sites; pull throughs; and a wide choice of sites on the water, in the trees, or on a bluff with a water view. All 71 of the campsites have water, 20/30/50 amp electric, a grill, and picnic tables -- a large majority of the sites have a covered picnic table. There are 25 premium sites which have full hookups - more full hooks are planned. You'll find the sites are very spacious and not right next door to your neighbor and most have grass groundcover. Discounts are available for Texas Outside visitors, senior citizens, Grapevine residents, and Good Sam or TACO members. If you or your friends don't have an RV, then the cabins are perfect. There are 3 one bedroom and 2 two bedroom cabins that are full service cabins, clean, well furnished, and reasonably priced. The Vineyards Campground is in the same cove as Scott's Landing Marina which serves food and has a gas dock. When the water is up, there are three coves for swimming, fishing, or parking the water toys. Some of the other amenities of The Vineyards include: a group pavilion with 8 RV sites; fishing pier and cleaning station; the cleanest restrooms I have seen in a Texas campground; 2 lane boat ramp; short nature trail; laundry room; horseshoe pit at the pavilion; and a playground. The staff we met were very friendly and helpful.
A Typical Texas Outsider Day:
After a hearty breakfast, we like to start the day looking for some smooth water to ski, which we can usually find down by the dam or in one of the small coves. If the water levels are down, be very careful. After skiing, fishing, or cruising (the Northeast side of the lake has some big and beautiful houses to gawk at), we'll head over to Little Petes for lunch, appetizers, dinner, and some music on the deck -- this is a great place to hang out. Time permitting we usually head over to the Northshore bike trail on the other side of the lake, or play either Grapevine Golf Course or Cowboys Golf Course, both of which are at the base of the dam.
Cool Nearby Activities:
Lots of things to see and do is another great reason to stay at The Vineyards. You are two miles from the City of Grapevine which has some excellent restaurants, a quaint downtown area with shops and restaurants, and fun annual events like Grapefest in September. Two miles northeast is Grapevine Mills Mall with plenty of shops (including a Bass Pro Shop's Outdoor World where you could spend hours and a big chunk of your money), restaurants (our favorite is Love & War in Texas for great food and good country music), and entertainment (Game Works for example). If you like golf, two of the Metroplex's best courses are 2 miles away -- Cowboys and Grapevine Golf Course. Go to the Texas Outside Golfing Section to find all the nearby courses and to learn more about each course. If it's raining or too hot or cold, or you want to golf at night after the kids hit the sack, then you need to head over to Texas Indoor Golf and play one of over 50 courses. You can read the Texas Outside review of Lake Grapevine or check out other local lakes in the Lakes and Boating Section of Texas Outside. The lake reviews will also include where you can rent a boat, jet ski, or cruise the lake and have fishing guides if you want to catch a trophy or dinner. Get out and enjoy the lake.

Texas Outside uses a tough rating scale and it’s difficult for a campground to get a “10”. Each park is rated on:
- Scenic Beauty: a campground that is flat with no trees or character gets a “1” and hills, lots of trees, beautiful lake site, and lush ground cover gets a “10”
- Park Condition: the cleaner, well kept, and maintained campgrounds receive high scores
- Amenities: we are looking for lots of amenities like restrooms, dump stations, playgrounds, boat ramps, shelters, concession stand, rental toys, and more.
- Campsites: low scores are given for sites that are right next to each other (good for getting to know your neighbors, but not what we’re looking for when we’re camping); have no lantern holder, no water or electricity, no fire pit, no grill, or no picnic table (or it’s rotten wood); have no trees and no view; the ground cover is crushed rock (my bare feet hate that stuff!); and they require a lot of work to get your rig level.
- Things To Do: Bonus points are given for campgrounds that offer lots of fun things to do at the park or very nearby – this includes: biking, hiking, climbing, boating, entertainment, golf, swimming, fishing, volleyball, horseshoes, and more
