Brief Overview:
Lake Whitney Marina @ Jupiter Cove is located in Juniper Cover on the north side of beautiful Lake Whitney - to learn more read a review of Lake Whitney. Lake Whitney Marina has a variety of accommodations, a park store, gas, fishing dock, and wet slips. The campsites and cabins are on a bluff overlooking Juniper Cove, the slips, and marina.

Lake Whitney Marina is not trying to compete with the LCRA or State Parks on Lake Whitney for camping, but rather is offering their slip rental customers a variety of services including overnight accommodations. There are a variety of campsites that among the trees with limited views of the lake. If you plan to spend the weekend on Lake Whitney, the cabins are perfect for a fun family weekend and they have easy access to your boat and the lake.

If you own a boat and are looking for a wet slip on beautiful Lake Whitney, then Lake Whitney Marina is the perfect location. This marina was recently awarded "Marina of the Year" and is one of the few marinas in Texas that has been designated a "Clean Marina" - a widely recognized accomplishment.

Amenities and Fun Things To Do:
100_8931Lake Whitney Marina @ Jupiter Cove has a variety of overnight accommodations including tent and RV sites, park model cabins, and two stationary houseboats. There are 107 campsites, none of which are right on the water. The sites have some combination of water and/or electricity (20, 30, or 50 amp is available), sewer hookup, picnic tables, and fire pits. Most of the sites are shaded and have a good to limited view of a cove, the slips, or the marina. Most of the sites have a picnic table and are fairly level. The best sites are 101 to 107 which are on a bluff with a 180 view of the lake. Showers and restroom facilities are dated and not the best - be aware that they are open pit toilets.

There are 12 cabins that are very clean, offer excellent views of the lake, and sleep 2 to 6 people. Sleeping accommodations vary but can include some combination of queen beds, bunk beds, sleeper sofa, or pull out sofas. All of the cabins are air conditioned and heated, have a nice deck, bathroom and shower, picnic table, and grill. Some have a TV and DVD. Cooking appliances vary from a microwave to a full kitchen with stove, oven, and coffee maker. Check with management to determine what you will need to bring which could include linens as well as eating and cooking utensils.

If you want a unique experience and have never slept on a houseboat, then you need to rent one of the stationary house boats. For example, My Yacht is a 35' houseboat that is berthed in one of the slips and available for rent. It is air conditioned, has a bathroom and shower, TV, full kitchen (no utensils) with a refrig, one queen, a sleeper dinette, front deck and upper deck with chairs, and a slide. Click here to view a more comprehensive list of the cabins and other accommodations.

Some of the other amenities at Lake Whitney Marina include:

  • a small ships store
  • gas dock
  • covered fishing pavilion
  • club house and meeting room
  • wet and dry storage
  • boat ramp and parking

Their shoreline is not very conducive to leaving your boat in the water overnight, but there are a few overnight guest slips for visitors at a modest rate.

As mentioned earlier, Lake Whitney Marina is the ideal spot to keep your boat. The slips are in and around a couple small protected coves with very deep water and have easy access to the main part of the lake. Lake Whitney Marina also has boat rentals available for customers, plus there is a ships store, gas dock, and ice.

A Typical Texas Outsider Day:

On our June 2007 trip to Lake Whitney, we stayed in My Yacht at Lake Whitney Marina. My Yacht is a 35' houseboat in one of the slips at the marina. The double bed will sleep two and the dinette will can sleep two more - it's small for two large adults. Bring your own towels, linens, and utensils if you plan to cook. It's fantastic to sit on the roof or either the front or back deck and enjoy the lake sunrise or sunset. We could park our boat in a slip right next to the houseboat - how convenient is that!

When we stay at Lake Whitney Marina, we enjoy cruising the lake, swimming in the coves, or skiing on the Brazos River which feeds Lake Whitney. Read our review of Lake Whitney to learn more about the Lake.

We also like to golf and have played both courses at White Bluff and the course at Lake Whitney Country Club. You can read our review of both courses.

Cool Nearby Activities:
We tried and tried but have been unsuccessful at finding a lot of fun things to see and do when you visit Lake Whitney. The Lake is great (picturesque with limestone bluffs, deep clear water, little boat traffic, good fishing, good coves for anchoring, skiing, or fishing) and is the main attraction for the area and the reason to stay at Lake Whitney Marina @ Jupiter Cove.

Here is a list of what we have found to do (don't get your hopes up - it's a short list):

  • golf - here is a map of nearby courses
  • restaurants - we like Mel's Steak House at Arrowhead Resort (everything is very good and the fudge pie a la mode is excellent), Hal's for a catfish sandwich or burger, Colorado Street Grille in Whitney is excellent for dinner, and Skillet's has a good all day buffet
  • rent a pontoon boat from Lake Whitney Marina and cruise, swim, or fish on the lake
  • shop in nearby Hillsboro at the Prime Outlets mall with over 100 shops (254 582-9205)
  • Waco is 25 minutes away and has lots of fun things to see and do - read more about Waco
  • head over to Whitney State Park for some hiking or mountain biking

Texas Outside Campground Rating System

Texas Outside uses a tough rating scale and it’s difficult for a campground to get a “10”.  Each park is rated on:

  • Scenic Beauty: a campground that is flat with no trees or character gets a “1” and hills, lots of trees, beautiful lake site, and lush ground cover gets a “10”
  • Park Condition:  the cleaner, well kept, and maintained campgrounds receive high scores
  • Amenities: we are looking for lots of amenities like restrooms, dump stations, playgrounds, boat ramps, shelters, concession stand, rental toys, and more.
  • Campsites:  low scores are given for sites that are right next to each other (good for getting to know your neighbors, but not what we’re looking for when we’re camping); have no lantern holder, no water or electricity, no fire pit, no grill, or no picnic table (or it’s rotten wood); have no trees and no view; the ground cover is crushed rock (my bare feet hate that stuff!); and they require a lot of work to get your rig level.
  • Things To Do: Bonus points are given for campgrounds that offer lots of fun things to do at the park or very nearby – this includes: biking, hiking, climbing, boating, entertainment, golf, swimming, fishing, volleyball, horseshoes, and more
