Texas Outside Favorite Sites: All of the sites are pretty similar, so we like to get a pull through site that is near the pool. There are also two adjoining sections of Hill Country RV Resort, we prefer the section nearest the office. The sites are a little smaller but they are well shaded.

Brief Overview:

If you're heading to the New Braunfels area as a winter Texan or just to spend some time, then you need to check out Hill Country RV Resort. This is the perfect RV Resort to park your rig, enjoy the Park's amenities, and explore the local area. The Park has very easy access to I-35 and is centrally located making it easy for day trips to Gruene, Austin, San Antonio, San Marcos, Wimberley, and many more fun places to explore. If you don't have an RV, then you can stay in one of the tent sites or the new cottages that are now available for rent or purchase.

Hill Country RV changed hands in December 2007, and the new owners have made a significant number of improvements and have a long list of other changes and additions that will enhance the park. This is both a retiree and family friendly park and the staff is very courteous and helpful and seems committed to making sure your stay at Hill Country RV Resort is enjoyable.

Amenities and Fun Things To Do:
San_antonio_8-08335

Hill Country RV Resort has over 300 sites, some of which are dedicated to monthly rentals. All of the sites have full hook-ups with 30/50 amp, sewer, and free wifi and cable. Some of the sites have small patios, some have covered picnic tables, and most are very level. There is ample room to maneuver the big rigs and the roads are paved and most of the sites are spacious, some up to 30' wide. Sites are a mixture of heavily to partially shaded. For you tent campers, there are six tent sites with water and electricity.

If you are tired of staying in expensive but small hotel rooms with mediocre service and limited to no amenities, then you should book one of the cottages (new in 2008) at Hill Country RV Resort. The six 300 square foot cottages are available for rent on a daily, weekly and monthly basis. Each of the cottages will sleep up to four adults and four children in a full or queen bed in the downstairs bedroom, a sleeper sofa in the living room, and an upstairs loft with two double mattresses that the kids will love. Be aware that the loft is only three and a half feet tall and may not be suitable for older kids or adults. The cottages are fully furnished - linens, towels and kitchen utensils, coffee maker, full sized refrigerator, stove and oven, toaster, and a microwave. The living area has a breakfast table with 4 chairs and a TV. The outside deck is perfect for sipping a cup of coffee or a cold drink. If you want to BBQ, there is a grill outside near the deck. The cottages are also available for sale. Hill Country RV Resort is in the process of adding additional and larger cottages.  On our last visit in 2010, we stayed in a two bedroom, one bath cottage that would sleep 7 very comfortably - a queen in one bed room, sleeper sofa and futon in the living room, and two twins in the other bedroom.

In addition to a great location and some good RV sites, Hill Country RV Resort is loaded with amenities to make your stay enjoyable. Some of the amenities include:

  • two indoor heated swimming pools with hot tubs
  • exercise room and a sauna
  • pool table, shuffleboard, badminton, and a ping pong table
  • shaded areas with BBQ grills, tables, and chairs for get togethers
  • two large recreation halls with kitchen facilities for meetings, social gatherings, and special events
  • craft room, woodworking shop, library, and a computer room with a free use Internet enabled computer
  • two dog runs, one of which is fenced
  • three laundry rooms all with brand new washers and dryers as of September 2008
  • amusement machines for adult use
  • game room with a shuffleboard table, bumper pool, ping pong, air hockey, foosball, pool table, Wii, Playstation 3, and XBOX
  • and the kids will love the jumping pillow and playscape

Some of the other things we liked about Hill Country RV Resort are the availability of the Wall Street Journal and USA Today delivered each week day, the several fun planned events through out the year, and the clean and spacious bath houses with several individual bathrooms with showers

A Typical Texas Outsider Day:

When you stay at Hill Country RV Resort, in addition to enjoying all of their amenities, there are tons of things to see and do that the entire family will enjoy. We love to play golf and you've got lots of excellent choices when you stay at Hill Country RV Resort - check out this golf map to find a near by course. If the horses are running its fun to zip down to Retama Park to see if we can win enough money to pay for our site or a dinner. Canyon Lake is close by and is an excellent lake for boating, fishing, or just enjoying the cool clear water. For nightlife and some good times, head to Gruene and Gruene Hall - to learn more check out our Gruene Page . And you can't come to this area without tubing down the Guadalupe River.

We had a blast tubing down the Comal River's clear, cool, and deep water.  This calm ride does include three fun chutes to add a little excitement to the trip.

Texas Outside Campground Rating System

Texas Outside uses a tough rating scale and it’s difficult for a campground to get a “10”.  Each park is rated on:

  • Scenic Beauty: a campground that is flat with no trees or character gets a “1” and hills, lots of trees, beautiful lake site, and lush ground cover gets a “10”
  • Park Condition:  the cleaner, well kept, and maintained campgrounds receive high scores
  • Amenities: we are looking for lots of amenities like restrooms, dump stations, playgrounds, boat ramps, shelters, concession stand, rental toys, and more.
  • Campsites:  low scores are given for sites that are right next to each other (good for getting to know your neighbors, but not what we’re looking for when we’re camping); have no lantern holder, no water or electricity, no fire pit, no grill, or no picnic table (or it’s rotten wood); have no trees and no view; the ground cover is crushed rock (my bare feet hate that stuff!); and they require a lot of work to get your rig level.
  • Things To Do: Bonus points are given for campgrounds that offer lots of fun things to do at the park or very nearby – this includes: biking, hiking, climbing, boating, entertainment, golf, swimming, fishing, volleyball, horseshoes, and more
