Brief Overview:
San Angelo State Park is located on the shores of the 5,540 acre O.C. Fisher Reservoir, which was completed by the US Corps of Engineers in 1952 for flood control on the North Concho River. The park, adjacent to the City of San Angelo in Tom Green County, is an oasis of quality outdoor recreation in an area of west Texas known as Concho Country. It was leased by Texas Parks and Wildlife Department in May 1995 and was opened to the public May 1, 1995. The property contains 7677 acres, most of which will remain undeveloped. Park redevelopment to its full recreational potential is expected to take a number of years. In the meantime, a wide range of facilities are available for the enjoyment of the visitor.

Amenities and Fun Things To Do:
Activities include camping, picnicking, hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding on multi-use trails, fishing, boating, and bird and wildlife observation including American Bison, prairie dog towns and the Official Texas State Longhorn Herd. The park has a hunting program with a State Park Annual Hunting Permit and special drawings for hunts for deer and spring turkey. The Lake level was extremely low is 2006 and the lake bottom is not safe -- swim at your own risk and wear shoes. There are also prehistoric animal tracks and Native American petroglyphs within the Park.

A Typical Texas Outsider Day:

You start the day early at the park's bird blind or trails looking for some of the more than 250 species of birds in the area or you might catch a glimpse of some the other wild animals that inhabit the park. There are also designated hunting areas during the hunting season.

Then check out some of the over 50 miles worth of hiking and biking -- bring your band-aids, some of the trails are rough. If you bring your horse, you can spend the afternoon on the extensive equestrian trail system in the park. Then watch the beautiful West Texas sunset and enjoy the evening fishing for some of the lake's monster catfish.

Cool Nearby Activities:
Attractions in the nearby city of San Angelo include movie theaters; shopping at major retail stores; Fort Concho, a restored historic fort; Concho Avenue, which has a historic shopping district; the Riverwalk; arena football; three public golf courses and the Cactus Hotel. There are also two other lakes in the area

Texas Outside Campground Rating System

Texas Outside uses a tough rating scale and it’s difficult for a campground to get a “10”.  Each park is rated on:

  • Scenic Beauty: a campground that is flat with no trees or character gets a “1” and hills, lots of trees, beautiful lake site, and lush ground cover gets a “10”
  • Park Condition:  the cleaner, well kept, and maintained campgrounds receive high scores
  • Amenities: we are looking for lots of amenities like restrooms, dump stations, playgrounds, boat ramps, shelters, concession stand, rental toys, and more.
  • Campsites:  low scores are given for sites that are right next to each other (good for getting to know your neighbors, but not what we’re looking for when we’re camping); have no lantern holder, no water or electricity, no fire pit, no grill, or no picnic table (or it’s rotten wood); have no trees and no view; the ground cover is crushed rock (my bare feet hate that stuff!); and they require a lot of work to get your rig level.
  • Things To Do: Bonus points are given for campgrounds that offer lots of fun things to do at the park or very nearby – this includes: biking, hiking, climbing, boating, entertainment, golf, swimming, fishing, volleyball, horseshoes, and more
