We round up the family at least once a year and head down to San Antonio for a stay at La Cantera for a weekend or longer - and we always hate to leave and can't wait to get back again the next year. La Cantera is a fantastic resort that is about 15 minutes north west of downtown San Antonio and you can't miss it if you're anywhere in the area - it's that majestic white building complex sitting on the bluff overlooking the scenic hills and surrounding area.
One of the reasons we like La Cantera is that they offer a variety of options for lodging and unequalled service and some great resort amenities. From the time you're greeted until the time you leave, you'll enjoy first class service and attention to detail. For lodging, you have several choices: standard guest rooms with majestic views, Casitas, or suites. We splurge and always get one of the suites which includes a 1000 square feet of living space with dining table, entertainment center, sleeper sofa, full size bath, refrigerator and wet bar, and comfy upscale appointments and leather furniture - plus a 270 degree panoramic and majestic view of the resort and pool, surrounding hillside, and golf course. Our suite also includes an oversized master bedroom and huge bath with a tiled walk-in shower and a separate jacuzzi tub plus a standard adjoining guest room with two double beds and bathroom. Be aware, that booking the suite will spoil you for subsequent stays in standard hotel rooms which now will seem cramped and boring!
Some of the other reasons we enjoy La Cantera include:
If you're going to enjoy all the amenities, then you need the fuel to keep you going and La Cantera has excellent choices to help you keep the calorie count high. For poolside dining, both infinity pools have bars (excellent margaritas) and menus with several choices. SweetFire serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. And Primero Cantina has some unique and delicious dishes and outside seating overlooking the pools and surrounding hills. I sampled a lot of everything that the Resort had to offer. And I love their restaurant motto: "Nourish the Body and the Soul Will Follow." To start the day we enjoyed a unique and very good version of Eggs Benedict (10 hour slow cooked smoked pulled pork, poached eggs, and BBQ Hollandaise) and the breakfast buffet loaded with everything from custom made omelets and waffles to eggs, bacon, sausage, hash browns, muffins, fruit, biscuits and gravy, and lots more.
And we tried Primero Cantina and SweetFire and enjoyed our meals both. For example, one meal was the "must have" fried deviled eggs, the Junk Basket filled with shrimp, oysters, and vegetables; and grilled Wagyu Skirt Steak, Lobster Mac & Cheese (outstanding), and house made Fennel Sausage which also came with a Strawberry Shortcake (condensed milk sorbet, strawberry gelee, and shortcake crumble)! I barely fit in the elevator on the way to our room!
It's very tempting to just sit on our butts, sip margaritas, enjoy the food and pool, and generally just chill out. But, one of the reasons we stay at La Cantera is to play two of the best golf courses in Texas - The Resort Course and The Palmer Course. Wow, what an unbelievable golf experience!
The Resort Course is at the top of the list of Texas Outside's Top Texas Resort Golf Courses. Some of the reasons we love this course include: excellent conditions, scenic beauty as it meanders up and down the San Antonio hill country, wide forgiving fairways, dramatic elevation changes, and a unique and challenging layout with a lots of variety and some very fun and challenging holes. Like La Cantera's suites, the Resort Course will spoil you and make other courses seem like boring pasture courses. Read our review of the Resort Course to learn more.
Also at the top of our list of favorite courses is La Cantera's Palmer Course. Similar to the Resort course, the conditions are lush and plush, the layout is both fun and challenging with each hole different than the previous holes, and best of all, you can score well here if you manage the course and your club selection.
The back nine is an unbelievable golf experience and this has to be the best nine in Texas as it plays up and down and along the top of a ridge on one of the tallest hills around. You'll find majestic views and scenery, huge elevation changes, blind shots, waterfalls, elevated tee boxes, uphill and downhill greens, and plenty of hazards waiting to eat your golf balls. And the perfect end to a round of golf can't be any better than sitting on the patio of the Palmer clubhouse sipping a cold one overlooking two of the best holes (#9 and #18) in Texas. Check out our review of the Palmer Course.
If you have time for more golf, San Antonio has plenty of excellent choices and a number of their other courses are also in our Top Twenty Best Texas Courses. You can use our San Antonio Golf Map to quickly locate a course, link to our review, and book a tee time.
If you're not into golfing or have some spare time after your round, La Cantera is convenient to a number of other fun and exciting things to see and do:
You and kids of all ages shouldn't get bored when you stay at La Cantera - if fact, we find that we never have enough time to do all that we would like to and we hate leaving this fantastic resort and all that it and San Antonio have to offer. Which is why, we immediately start thinking about returning as soon as we can.
