Hammock Beach Resort Review
Here is our review of Hammock Beach Resort which we really enjoyed as part of a golfing vacation to Florida. Wow, what a special, unique, and outstanding resort with two excellent golf courses, first class service, and excellent amenities. Not only are the grounds impressive with colorful landscaping, palm trees swaying in the breeze, lush and plus golf fairways and greens, and sparkling ponds with fountains but Resort tower is stunning with it's red tile roof and a variety of pastel colors!
Hammock Beach Resort is located on a a two mile stretch of pristine and beautiful Atlantic Ocean coastline in Palm Coast, Florida. This AAA Four-Diamond property is owned and managed by Salamander Hotels & Resorts which has a portfolio of excellent resorts including Reunion Resort and Innisbrook in Florida; Salamander Resort & Spa in Middleburg, Virginia; the Five Star and Five Diamond Woodlands Inn in the charming village of Summerville, South Carolina; and the Grand Resort at Cap Cana in the Caribbean. As part of our golfing vacation in Florida we also stayed at Reunion and Innisbrook - wow, very impressive and home to 7 excellent golf courses. Here is a link to our review of Reunion Resort and review of Innisbrook.
Some of what we enjoyed and believe sets Hammock Beach Resort apart from other resorts we have visited includes:
a variety of upscale accommodations ranging from one to four bedroom suites with stunning views of the ocean, pools, and golf course to a Lodge which combines the experience of a luxury boutique hotel with the service and amenities of the Hammock Beach Resort to two and three bedroom Villas which offer the comforts of home with generous living rooms, full kitchens, and lots more
two spectacular nationally recognized golf courses designed by Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson - each of the courses are fantastic and very unique and different from each other
an eclectic mix of tastes that will please everyone's palette including Italian, seafood, tamaki and sashimi platters, burgers by the pool, and a variety of other cuisine that is fresh, perfectly prepared, delicious, and accompanied by a superb service
outstanding amenities that range from a lazy river to a spa to a 117 foot custom built yacht
top notch service with a focus on superb customer service and a real pride in their resort and making sure that guests have a memorable experience
Golf at Hammock Beach Resort
It was hard to pick a highlight during our stay, but the 36 holes of golf was hard to beat. No other course we played during a two months of golfing in Florida came close to matching the six breathtaking holes which overlook the world's largest water hazard, the Atlantic Ocean! The Ocean Course at Hammock Beach Resort was designed by Jack Nicklaus and it has a unique combination of interesting holes, fantastic greens, near perfect conditions, forgiving lush fairways, and some very fun holes. Read our review of the Ocean Course to lean more.
The Conservatory Course, designed by Tom Watson, is very different from its sister course. This 18 has a British links look and fee and it is home to huge undulating greens, Carolina style creeks, tumbling waterfalls, mounding, and an island green. At over 7500 yards from the tips and with several water hazards and over 140 bunkers, the Conservatory Course is fair but very demanding and requires accuracy and some excellent course management skills to score well. Read our review of the Conservatory Course to learn why we loved this course.
Accommodations at Hammock Beach Resort
We stayed in one of the one bedroom suites during our stay at Hammock Beach Resort and it just doesn't get much better. Our Junior suite was far from the standard hotel type room that we were expecting - very well appointed, spacious with over 750 square feet, and comfortable with a lot of upscale touches that separated it from typical hotel suites. And the view from our balcony was stunning - I had a hard time getting my wife to leave the view and head to the golf course or dinner! We were on the 5th floor and overlooked the pool area, a large pond with fountains, the 18th hole of the Ocean Course, and the sparkling sand and water of the Atlantic Ocean - stunning and hard to leave! In addition to the beautiful view, the balcony had a couple iron chairs with cushions and a table that was perfect for games, drinks, and watching the sun set.
And our room was very unique and included:
a spacious living area with a dark wood beamed ceiling with an ornate fan and rich wood crown molding, a three cushioned stuffed couch with two end tables and lamps, a comfortable chair and ottoman, and a large screen TV
a beautiful 3 piece wall to wall unit had a bar area, marble top and sink, 2 burner stove top, coffee pot, microwave, mini-refrigerator, desk area, and 3 drawers with 4 place settings including utensils, plates, wine glasses and more
a very comfortable king bed with rich coverings and pillows that was very difficult to get out of each morning
huge closet with complimentary robes and two suitcase stands
a very spacious bathroom with a large and deep jacuzzi tub (great to work out some of the kinks from golfing 36 holes), dark brown wood cabinets with two sinks and three mirrors, plus a walk in tiled shower with several big fluffy towels
The 11 story high rise tower at Hammock Beach has 200 one to four bedroom suites all of which offer stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean. The suites range in size from 750 to over 3200 square feet. The Junior suites have king beds, kitchenettes, private balconies, and garden tubs and the multi-bedroom suites have full kitchens, spacious living rooms, washers and dryers, large living areas, and more.
Located over the pro shop and Atlantic Grill, the Lodge has a luxury boutique hotel feel to it. Each of the 20 guest rooms have stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean and 9th or 18th hole plus a mini fridge, coffee maker, and high speed internet.
Adjacent to the main Resort tower are the two and three bedroom well appointed Villas, some of which have lush tropical golf course views. Staying in the Villas offers more privacy and all the comforts of home with generous living rooms, full kitchens, washers and dryers, and more.
Hammock Beach Resort Amenities
If unique and comfortable lodging, good service, and two award winning golf courses should be more than enough to get you excited about staying at Hammock Beach Resort. But wait, there is even more to entice you to stay here - the Resort is loaded with amenities that will suit everyone's taste and keep you busy and entertained for some time. So plan on staying a couple extra days to take advantage of the amenities some of which include:
kids will enjoy Kids Crew which is a fun kids escape with recreational activities that will keep them entertained and happy for hours
the multi-leveled Fantasy Water Pavilion in the heart of the Resort has four of the Resort's six pools, a lazy river, water slide, and a beach volley ball court - there is also an indoor pool as well as a pool with a sandy beach
if you have a boat, the Marina at Hammock Beach, has over 200 slips with floating concrete docks that can moor boats from 30' to over 100' and guests have full access to all of the resort amenities and two and three bedroom condos are also available for overnight stays at the marina
the Marina is home to the Sundancer which is a custom built 117 foot yacht (with two bars, fully galley, lounge with a fireplace, and more - all of which has beautiful cherry wood interiors and custom leather furniture) that is available for a brunch cruise, corporate events, a wedding at sea, or other special events or functions
before you head out for your round of golf, you might want to spend some time on the Resort's 9 hole putting course
the eight lighted "Hydro-Grid" clay tennis courts overlooking the intercoastal waterway at the Yacht Harbor Village is perfect for some fun or competitive tennis or lessons or clinics
if you need some sun and surf, the Resort has two miles of pristine coquina sand beach to relax and play on plus chairs and towels and umbrellas are available as well as picnic lunches
rental bicycles are available to ride through some upscale neighbor hoods, down to the Marina, or any of the miles of tree lined trails
- surfing lessons are available as well as kayaking tours or a trek through natural Florida habitats
after biking, golfing, and all that sand you should head to the Spa any of the several services including a massage, facial, body wrap, or treatments that are native to the coastline
- another place I needed to spend some time and didn't was the fitness center to try and wear off some of the calories from all the good food - plenty of state-of-the-art equipment for both cardio and weight training, classes (aerobics to yoga and pilates), and professional wellness counselors
- the pro shops at either of the two courses are well stocked with everything you need to look good and score well
Dining at Hammock Beach Resort
Equally as superb as the golf, amenities, and accommodations is the dining at Hammock Beach Resort. You can't beat breakfast, lunch, or dinner at the Atlantic Grill on the patio overlooking the Atlantic and the 18th hole of Ocean Golf Course - and the food is as great as the view!
If you have a craving for some outstanding pasta, then try Delfinos which features Italian cuisine with everything from appetizers to salads to pizza or pasta and several entrees like Ossco buco, Chicken Scallopini, or Scampi. During our visit they also had a reasonably priced Prix Fixe Dinner with soup, salad, 4 entree choices, and dessert. One of the things we also liked about Delfinos was that they offered half or full portions on the pastas. Overlooking Delfinos is the small and cozy Sushi Bar that features several appetizers, over 12 hand-rolled tamaki choices, and several sashimi platters with Yellow Fin Tuna, Salmon, Smoked Eel, Scallops, Octopus, and more
While you're enjoying the pool you can much on some burgers and other light menu items or sip some excellent Pina Coladas and other pool side libations. The Ocean Bar above the pro shop has a great balcony overlooking the 18th green which is perfect for drinks and settling your golfing bets, appetizers and the sunset, or a lunch of soup, salad, or sandwiches.
Our breakfast and dinner at Atlantic Grill was outstanding and the view is to kill for - hard to find a place in Texas where you can dine on some great food while overlooking the ocean, sparkling sand, and lush green golf course! I really enjoyed our Eggs Benedict for breakfast and our dinner at Atlantic Grill was fantastic - creamy She Crab Bisque Soup, excellent crispy Calamari Fillet with a roasted pepper marinara and a sweet Thai Chili sauce, pan roasted Duck with creamy Orzo, apricot marmalade, braised greens, and Cabernet reduction; grilled Atlantic Salmon with Wasabi potato puree, Asian vegetable and sweet and sour Vinaigrette; plus a delicious house made warm molten cake with vanilla bean ice cream. We waddled to the elevator and I was a little nervous that I wouldn't make it through the elevator doors and if I did that the elevator may not be able to lift me and all that good food up to our room.
Hammock Beach Resort also offer "Old Fashioned Picnics" with several varieties that can include everything you need for a picnic on the beach or somewhere else. For example, some of what the Romance Picnic Basket includes is chilled shrimp, cold sliced beef tenderloin, marinated vegetable salad, chocolate truffles, and water, wine, or beer; or the Beach Basket included country fried chicken, an Italian Bread Hoagie with turkey, ham, salami and more, potato salad, fruit, brownies, and cookies.
Pricing for all of the dining options are at resort level pricing but much more reasonable than most resorts we have stayed at where two eggs over easy or a burger is $18. The Resort has has some excellent Golf Stay & Play Packages that can include a breakfast, unlimited play, and a spacious Villa or vacation home.
Bottom line - this is one of the best resorts that we have visited - it just doesn't get much better than two championship courses that are fun, challenging, memorable, and in perfect condition; excellent service from the bell boys to golf pro shop staff; unique lodging options; stunning views; delicious food; and excellent amenities. We can't wait to get back.
