Castaways RV Park and Cabins Overview:

Castaways RV Park & Cabins is a membership only RV park with cabins and condominium rooms available to the public. The Park sits on the north east side of Lake Conroe on 41 acres with over 2000 feet of shoreline on a large well protected cove. The terrain is flat to gently rolling and the majority of the RV sites are under trees and well shaded. The Park is clean but is dated and a number of the amenities are in need of some repair - for example the tennis court nets are full of holes and the court needs to be resurfaced.

When we stayed in 2009, the brand new condos and the cabins were open to the public. Non Castaway members could stay in the park contingent upon taking a guided tour of Castaways facilities and listening to the membership options.

There are few other RV parks in Texas that have as many amenities as Castaways. The staff is friendly, helpful, and attentive.

Amenities and Fun Things To Do:

Castaways RV Park offers three areas for RVs and tenters. The first area, which is farthest from the Lake (a two minute walk) is best suited for the larger rigs. This upper area is flat, pretty open, and the sites are side by side with full hookups. The sites are fairly level and cruised stone.

The middle camping area is three rows of RV sites with water, electric, and sewer. Bigger rigs may have a tough time getting into most of these sites. The sites are side by side, mostly dirt and gravel, and various degrees of level - some very level, others not. Hook-up locations can be challenging and difficult to reach unless you have extensions for 3 all three hook ups. Most of the sites have picnic tables, some of which need to be repaired. All of the sites are under the trees and well shaded.

The third camping area is about 100 yards from the water's edge and set under the trees. These sites are reserved for tents, pop-ups, and very small travel trailers. Some sites have tables and most have water and electric hookups.

Castaways has 6 fantastic cabins that are about 100 yards from the water. These cabins seem new and were very clean and well maintained when we visited Castaways. The cabins will sleep 6 to 8 people (kids will love the loft) and everything you need for an enjoyable weekend or longer:

  • fully equipped kitchens
  • air conditioning and heating
  • front decks with deck furniture and excellent views of the lake
  • BBQ grill and picnic table
  • one bedroom, full bathroom, and loft
  • full size refrigerator
  • dining area with table and chairs
  • plus bedding and pillows

When we stayed in May 2009, we had two RV sites and we were the first renters in the new condominiums. The condos in the Castaway RV Park aren't your typical rental condo - they are outstanding! The condos are for sale and until they are sold, some of them will remain in a rental pool. When you open the door and step inside, you'll be amazed - they are beautiful and very well appointed! From the leather and wood couch to the granite counter tops, this condo is in mint condition. Granted we were the first occupants to ever stay here, but the care and attention to detail that Castaways put into decorating these 6 condos demonstrates that they will most likely continue to maintain the same level of pristine condition that we experienced.

The two bedroom, two bath condo that we stayed in had all of the same room amenities as a five star resort including a flat screen TV, fully stocked kitchen and a large glass chandelier to boot! With views of the lake from every room and a balcony for the upstairs units, this is a condo that won't disappoint and one we would highly recommend.

Castaways is our kind of RV park - close to the water and lots of things to do. Some of the amenities include:

  • swimming pool with dual slides
  • ping pong tables
  • two tennis courts
  • miniature golf course
  • horseshoes
  • volleyball
  • horseshoes
  • basketball court
  • baseball field
  • kids pool
  • laundromat
  • clean showers and restroom

Castaways also has a two lane boat ramp and as well as guest waverunner ramps and boat slips that are well padded. The shoreline in front of the tent sites is also good for boat parking - the shore line is sandy.

You won't find many parks in Texas that offer that many amenities as well as easy access to a fun lake.

A Typical Texas Outsider Day:

We enjoyed 3 days over Memorial Day at Castaways and were busy from the time we got up to well after midnight. After a hearty breakfast and before it got to hot, we hit the tennis courts from some competitive doubles and singles, then over to the pool to cool off. While some of us swam, we started the ping pong tournament! And over the rest of the weekend we had a volleyball match and a round of horseshoes.

The afternoons were spent on the lake enjoying:

  • a boat ride to enjoy a very good lunch (and back again for dinner plus drinks, music, and a fantastic sunset at Grumpy Larry's Lakehouse (936 856-7936)
  • cruising, swimming, tubing, and skiing in some of the coves around Lake Conroe - in a cove on the edge of one of the Bentwater golf holes we went diving for golf balls to refill our bags with all we had lost on previous outings
  • dinner, dancing, drinking, and volleyball on the water at Wolfies and Pappas
  • 18 holes of fantastic golf (the course was outstanding, my score sucked!) at Wedgewood Golf Course

Texas Outside Campground Rating System

Texas Outside uses a tough rating scale and it’s difficult for a campground to get a “10”.  Each park is rated on:

  • Scenic Beauty: a campground that is flat with no trees or character gets a “1” and hills, lots of trees, beautiful lake site, and lush ground cover gets a “10”
  • Park Condition:  the cleaner, well kept, and maintained campgrounds receive high scores
  • Amenities: we are looking for lots of amenities like restrooms, dump stations, playgrounds, boat ramps, shelters, concession stand, rental toys, and more.
  • Campsites:  low scores are given for sites that are right next to each other (good for getting to know your neighbors, but not what we’re looking for when we’re camping); have no lantern holder, no water or electricity, no fire pit, no grill, or no picnic table (or it’s rotten wood); have no trees and no view; the ground cover is crushed rock (my bare feet hate that stuff!); and they require a lot of work to get your rig level.
  • Things To Do: Bonus points are given for campgrounds that offer lots of fun things to do at the park or very nearby – this includes: biking, hiking, climbing, boating, entertainment, golf, swimming, fishing, volleyball, horseshoes, and more
