Review of The Vineyards Campground on Lake Grapevine
The Vineyards Campground on Lake Grapevine is one of the best RV parks and campgrounds in Texas and it's a perfect location if you want to explore Grapevine or the Dallas Fort Worth area or just camp on a lake. The Vineyards was previously a Corp of Engineers Park known as Silver Lake Campground. In October 2002 the City of Grapevine leased the land from the Corp of Engineers and spent over $2 million on improvements in 2006 and has invested a significant chunk of change into the park ever since then. For example, in 2010 and 2011 sewer hook-ups were added, some of the sites had new level concrete pads added, several new cabins were purchased and available for rent, new landscaping and over 200 new trees was planted, and a new camp store was built. In 2013 new cabins were built, the camp store was remodeled, and more campsites were added. It's not surprising that The Vineyards received the "Guest Rated A" certification again in 2013 - which was the sixth year in a row and one of only six RV parks in the nation to accomplish that feat! A tribute to the staff.
The City of Grapevine and Joe Moore, the Assistant Director of Parks & Recreation, have made a significant commitment to ensuring that The Vineyards on Lake Grapevine remains one of the best parks in Texas. And their commitment is working:
Some of the reasons for all of the accolades is because the campground is in excellent condition, meticulously maintained and very clean, the sites are great, and the park is staffed by some of the friendliest and most helpful work campers we have encountered.
A couple of other reasons why we love this park is because it is on the shores of a great lake - Lake Grapevine - and just minutes from downtown Grapevine which is one of our favorite cities and has lots of fun things to see and do.
The Vineyard's sites sit on and around two peninsulas that jut into Lake Grapevine and as such all sites have a lake view and several campsites are within 50 to 100 yards of the water.
The Vineyards offers discounts for Texas Outside visitors, senior citizens, Grapevine residents, and Good Sam or TACO members.
The Vineyards Campground on Lake Grapevine offers you lots of choices for camping. You can choose from shaded or open sites, sites on the water or under the trees, pull throughs or back ins. Most of the sites are very spacious and give you lots of grassy areas on all sides of your site. A number of the sites are offset and angled giving you more space as well as an unobstructed view. 93 sites have water, 20/30/50 amp electric, sewer hookup, a grill, and picnic tables -- a large majority of the sites have a covered picnic table. Some of the water sites have a very nice wooded deck/patio overlooking the lake and most of those have a hanging potted plant - a nice and unique touch.
A lot of the sites were redone in 2010 and they are now level and long enough to accommodate the big rigs. Parking and driving around the park is easy - the roads are paved and big enough for the larger rigs to easily maneuver.
There are several sites that are 50 to 100 yards from the lake but most of the waterfront sites are not shaded. All of the shaded sites are under the Post Oaks and have a good lake view. Over 200 new trees were added in 2010 and 2011 providing shade to more of the sites.
If you or your friends don't have an RV, then the cabins at The Vineyards are perfect. There are 15 cabins (park models) which are one or two bedroom that sleep two to six comfortably. All of the cabins are fully furnished and include a bathroom with a shower, well equipped kitchen, full refrigerator, dining table, and living area with a couch and chair and cable TV. The deck is perfect for coffee in the morning or a cocktail and sunset in the evening. There is an outside grill and picnic table. Most of the cabins are shaded and all have lake views and easy access to the water. In 2010, 195 trees were added to provide shade as well as enhance the park esthetics.
The three coves are perfect for fishing, swimming, or just sitting in a lawn chair with your feet in the water. For boaters, there is a two lane boat ramp and the big cove has a couple floating boat docks which make it easy to load or unload your gear and passengers. The shoreline is gently sloping and conducive to overnight parking for your water toys.
If you like to fish, there is a fishing pier and fish cleaning station. Some of the other amenities in The Vineyards Campground include:
The Vineyards Campground also hosts a number of activities during the year that range from hiking to yoga to family game night.
After a hearty breakfast, we like to start the day looking for some smooth water to board, tube or ski - which we can usually find down by the dam or in one of the small coves. We'll cruise the north side of the lake to gawk at the big beautiful homes or head right from The Vineyards and cruise by the Gaylord Hotel and Glass Cactus nightclub. We are not aware of any boat parking to allow you to park and walk up to the Gaylord or the Glass Cactus..
And we can't leave Lake Grapevine without cruising over to Little Pete's for lunch, appetizers, dinner, or drinks and the live music on their deck - this is a great place to hang out for a few hours.
In the same cove and just across the water from The Vineyards Campground is a marina and they also have a small floating restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner and sometimes has a live band on the weekends. You may be able to hear the music from your campsite.
Time permitting we usually head over to the Northshore bike trail on the other side of the lake, or play golf at either Grapevine Golf Course or Cowboys Golf Course, both of which are at the base of the dam and are excellent courses.
And it's hard for us to stay away from the nearby Love & War in Texas - they have great live music, a fantastic chicken fried chicken, and great margaritas!
If you are going to Lake Grapevine then you need to get out on the water and enjoy this beautiful lake. Silver Lake Marina rents ski boats, waverunners, pontoon boats, party barges, and a 100 person private charter boat.
Lots of things to see and do is another great reason to stay at The Vineyards. You are two miles from the City of Grapevine which has some excellent restaurants, a quaint downtown area with shops and restaurants, and fun annual events like Grapefest in September.
Two miles northeast is Grapevine Mills Mall with plenty of shops (including a Bass Pro Shop's Outdoor World where you could spend hours and a big chunk of your money), restaurants (our favorite is Love & War in Texas for great food and good country music), and entertainment (Game Works for example).
If you like golf, two of the Metroplex's best courses are 2 miles away -- Cowboys and Grapevine Golf Course. Go to the Texas Outside Golfing Section to find all the nearby courses and to learn more about each course.
You can read the Texas Outside review of Lake Grapevine or check out other local lakes in the Lakes and Boating Section of Texas Outside. The lake reviews will also include where you can rent a boat, jet ski, or cruise the lake and have fishing guides if you want to catch a trophy or dinner. Get out and enjoy the lake.
Texas Outside uses a tough rating scale and it’s difficult for a campground to get a “10”. Each park is rated on:
