An Adventurous Getaway at Country Woods Inn in Glen Rose

Country Woods InnIf you're looking for a fun and unique weekend getaway or vacation for a few days, we can highly recommend Country Woods Inn in Glen Rose. Located just down the river walk from the Glen Rose town square and situated on 40 wooded acres, with a half mile of river frontage along the Paluxy River, Country Woods Inn is:

  • home to some very unique and cozy cabins and century old farmhouses
  • glamping in a vintage restored Airstream or Santa Fe Railroad car
  • walking trails and a swimming and fishing hole
  • farm animals to feed and pet
  • lots of things to do for the entire family on property and nearby

Lodging Options at Country Woods Inn

During our two day visit to Country Woods Inn, we stayed in the Saddle House and loved it! The Saddle House was the machine shop for the original farm and the meadow behind the Saddle House produced enough vegetables for two counties in the area in the 1940's and '50's.

Saddle House at Country Woods InnThe Saddle House is one big room that has a very rustic country feel and is loaded with antiques and artifacts collected over the years. The cabin has an old fashioned feel to it thanks to the antiques; short doors and low bathroom ceiling (I guess people were a lot shorter in the olden days!); tin roof, wood paneled walls, wooden rod and rings holding heavy wool curtains; and a large glass wall overlooking the meadow and hillside that deer roam. Very well done! There were two comfy double beds with nature inspired covers and quilts, three end tables with old lamps and clocks, and a closet with two heavy flannel robes, a rain coat, extra blankets, and a dresser.

The living area had two nice heavy wood rocker chairs, an upholstered chair and matching couch, and a flat screen TV (a nice modern amenity!), a DVD player, and several DVD movies. The small country kitchen has a wood kitchen table with three chairs, coffee maker, an old fashion stove and refrigerator, and all the utensils needed to make your meals. The Saddle House bathroom includes an old fashion tub with shower, old fashion pedestal sink, wood mirror with shelf and hooks, plenty of bath towels, and an old fashion stand alone heater.

A few other things that made Saddle House unique and different from any other lodging we have enjoyed included: a jar with ideas in it to encourage you to connect with nature with ideas like: find outdoor items on a card during a scavenger hunt; make mud pies; skip stones in the river; use the walking stick on a nature hike; find several birds on a list; gaze at the clouds; and lots more ideas to get kids outdoors and enjoying nature. Just outside the front door was a hammock, a fire pit and chairs, a grill and stone fire oven, a croquet set, and a friendly mule waiting to greet you.

We visited on a weekday and on our breakfast table was a big fruit basket and some out of this world freshly baked blueberry muffins! On weekends guest can enjoy a continental free breakfast at the Breakfast Barn where all the animals hang out. You can feed and brush them too.

We didn't go into any of the other lodging options, but from the outside they all looked cool and unique and the lodging choices include:

  • the Main House which will sleep twelve (a loft and three bedrooms) and has a Main Houselarge Harvest table and small country kitchen, four bathrooms, a living room with a fireplace, a sprawling rock patio, and extensive grounds
  • three century old farmhouses that have been renovated into two wings each (sleeping 4 to 8), complete with a double locked privacy door and two front porches overlooking the meadow and wooded hills
  • the original hay barn for the animals has been converted into a cabin with a queen and full bed, shower bath, full kitchen and a charming reading room plus a front porch that overlooks the corral where the horses hang out
  • near the barn yard is the 1890s Farm House that has been renovated into two wings with a privacy door and two rock porches

Airstream at Railroad Car at Country Woods InnAcross the multi-acre meadow with horses, deer, and a friendly mule and tucked in and under the trees is the adventure glamping area at Country Woods Inn. There are restored vintage Airstreams, one with twin beds and the other with four bunk beds. Each Airstream has a shower bath, kitchenette with a fridge, microwave, coffee maker (no oven), and more. They also have some combination of a hammock, tree swing, picnic table, and Adirondack chairs overlooking the meadow. It doesn't get much more peaceful and quiet than the adventure glamping area.

In the same area tucked under the trees is a renovated Santa Fe Railroad box car with two bunk beds that sleeps four, a full kitchen, sitting area, and an old fashioned bathroom with a claw foot tub/shower. Outside is a vintage playground for the kids. Also nestled among the trees is Cabin in the Woods which is "a sanctuary in nature and a perfect hideaway for two" with one full bed, a fireplace, and full bath.

Things To See & Do At Country Woods Inn

In addition to some very unique lodging options, what makes staying at Country Woods Inn fun, particularly for the kids, are the wide variety of fun things to do during your stay, some of which include:

  • see how many birds you can find on a card with a list of "the birds of Country Woods Inn" some of which include: Great Blue Heron, Black Vulture, Northern Flicker, Rock Dove, Red Bellied Woodpecker, and over 40 more
  • catch fireflies in the evening
  • go on a fossil hunt on the hillside which usually always results in a treasure to take home
  • greet and feed the barnyard animals: Christopher the great goose; Sir Oinks a Lot (guess what animal this is) and Ollie who was brought to the property by a guest; Eliza and Bradley the donkeys; and Ella the sheep who thinks she is still a little lamb

  • ride bikes or walk the Country Park paved trail along the Paluxy River that borders the property
  • roast marshmallows or tell ghost stories around the campfire circles
  • reflect in the Chapel in the Woods
  • check out the "vintage playground" by the Rail Car
  • try bowling on a dirt hay bale lined bowling lane, play chess on the big outdoor chess board, play croquet, volleyball, or badminton, shoot some hoops, relax in a hammock, or try one of the 5 rope swings
  • fish and swim just steps from your cabin

Fun Things To Do In And Around Glen Rose and Country Woods Inn

We love Glen Rose and all that it has to offer ranging from golf to BBQ to antiques and dinosaurs. During our short two day visit to Country Woods Inn we:

  • played a round of golf on Squaw Valley's Apache Links Golf Course - a fantastic links style front nine and a traditional and fun back nine - read our review of Apache Links
  • visited and really enjoyed a tour of Dinosaur Word - see this "a visit with the dinosaur's" article to learn more
  • rode bikes on one of the mountain bike trails at Dinosaur Valley State Park
  • walked around the town square and checked out the shops
  • explored Big Rocks Park on the Paluxy River across from Country Woods Inn
  • enjoyed some good wings and cold beer at Back Porch Sports Bar, a hearty breakfast at Big Cup Eatery & Bar, an out-of-this-world delicious burger at the Green Pickle, a tasty Italian dinner at La Vita Italian Restaurant - unfortunately we missed the fine dining at River House Grill
