Settled in 1816, Galveston now has a population of 60,000 friendly folks spread out over a small island separated from the mainland by Galveston Bay. The island is 32 miles long and two and a half miles wide. At one point in Texas history, Galveston was the largest city in Texas.
The Port of Galveston was established in 1825 and served as the main port for the Texas Navy during the Texas Revolution and later served as the capital of the Republic of Texas.
