Review of Kiva Dunes Lodge Stay & Play

As part of a golfing vacation to Gulf Shores, we got to spend a couple days golfing and staying at Kiva Dunes in Gulf Shores, Alabama - what a fantastic golf course and excellent stay and play lodging! This review of Kiva Dunes Lodge Stay & Play will tell you more about why we liked Kiva Dunes so much. And why I wish I had taken the golf lesson advice in the pictures below.

Kiva Dunes

View from the balcony of Kiva LodgeWe arrived at Kiva Lodge just about sunset and when we opened the door to our condo on the 6th floor and saw the large balcony and the glow of the setting sun, we immediately dropped the bags, grabbed a couple beers, and headed to the balcony to watch the sun set over the stunning 18th hole at Kiva Dunes and the palm trees swaying in the breeze - it just doesn't get much prettier. Wow! What a way to start a week of golfing in Gulf Shores!

After the sun set, we drifted back into our mansion and started exploring all 1600 square feet of our condo - 4 bedrooms, 4 baths, a large living area, dining room, and a good sized fully equipped kitchen. Since it was just the two of us, we had a hard time picking which of the four bedrooms to spend the night in - maybe we'll check into a different bedroom each night just to experience each room.

For the first night we decided on what appeared to be the master bedroom - a huge very comfy king bed with soft fluffy pillows, an oversized bathroom with a jacuzzi tub, and a view of the 18th hole at Kiva Dunes. Turns out that the bed was so comfy, I didn't want to risk trying another room.

Our condo had a great room and dining room that overlooked the 18th hole. The living and a dining area were very well appointed with art work and decorations, tiled floors, and two area rugs. The living area had two large and comfortable leather couches, a chair and ottoman that was hard to give up, a coffee table and end tables, plus a large wall unit with a big screen TV. The dining area had a huge heavy wood dining table and 6 chairs plus a buffet and a great view of the golf course. All of the appointments throughout our condo were well done with an island style decor.

The kitchen in our Kiva Lodge condo was large and very well equipped with everything you need to cook your friends a gourmet meal. Some of what was in the kitchen included: a microwave, dishwasher, large refrigerator with an ice maker, oven, 2 coffee makers, blender, and toaster plus lots of glassware, pots and pans, and utensils. And if you need to do laundry, there is also a washer and dryer.

As I mentioned, our condo had 2 bedrooms that opened up to the living room and 2 more on the dining room side of the condo. Each bedroom had their own private bathroom making for a perfect setup for a golfing vacation with 2nd bedroom your family, golfing buddies, or some friends. The bedrooms included:

  • a large master bedroom with a view of the golf course, a huge comfy king bed, large walk in closet, an armoire with a flat screen TV, and an oversized bathroom with two sinks, a jacuzzi tub (which helped get rid of some of the golf kinks), and a tile shower
  • two bedrooms with queen beds, an armoire and TV, and a large bedroom with a shower tub combo
  • the fourth bedroom had two double bed, shuttered windows overlooking the golf course, an armoire and TV and a good sized bathroom

One of my favorite things about our condo (besides the soft bed, huge flat screen, and ice maker and blender for the View from the Kiva Lodge BalconyMargaritas) was the huge balcony that overlooked the pool, several golf holes, and the surrounding area including the natural areas and the Bay. It just doesn't get much better enjoying a cup of coffee or a cold drink or a competitive game of dominos overlooking all of that! And when the sun sets, it's a jaw dropper! The balcony had a recliner, a small table, swivel rocker chairs. And one afternoon we got to enjoy an beautiful rainbow.

While overlooking the Kiva Dunes Golf Course and sipping a tasty Margarita, I was able to start to psyche myself up for a great round of golf and I formed a strategy to birdie each of the holes I saw from the balcony. I also made a note on how to avoid the treacherous sparkling white sand bunkers, the water, and natural areas lining the holes. However, none of what I planned worked - but I did enjoy the margarita and the Kiva Dunes golf course. 18th hole at Kiva Dunes

Of of the great things about staying at the Kiva Lodge is that the pro shop is in the same building and the carts are right outside the Kiva Lodge's front door and the range and first hole are just around the corner. Kiva Dunes Golf Course is fantastic - near perfect conditions, outstanding service, some fun holes, fair but demanding, and very scenic. But Kiva Dunes is no walk in the park thanks to challenging water hazards, deep bunkers, and large, fast greens. Kiva Dunes Golf Course is one of those rare golf courses you'll never forget thanks to an enjoyable round of golf in a setting that soothes frayed senses. It's not surprising that Kiva Dunes has won a number of awards and accolades, some of which include:

  • GolfWeek's list of "Best Resort Courses" and "Best Courses You Can Play" in 2011
  • Golf Digest's 2011 list of the "Best Golf Resorts"
  • shortly after opening, Kiva Dunes was rated #2 in the nation by Golf Digest

In addition to a great golf course, some of the other amenities you can enjoy during your stay include:

  • three different pools including the pool at Kiva Lodge Tiki Bar at Kiva Lodge
  • a Tiki Bar overlooking the 18th hole which is a great place to collect (or pay off in my case) your golfing wins and heckle fellow golfers trying to par the 18th hole
  • easy access to over 3000 feet of some of stunning white sandy beaches
  • lit tennis courts
  • a well equipped pro shop with everything you need to look good and play well
  • a fitness center to help you burn off some of the carbs from the good restaurants and fun beach bars

Kiva Dunes GrillThe Kiva Dunes Grill serves breakfast and lunch and everything that we tasted was excellent. Breakfast options include a variety of choices from the Golfer's Special (2 eggs, sausage, grits, and toast) to French Toast Sticks to cereal and fruit. The lunch menu includes appetizers (some of which include Cheese Sticks, Firecracker Shrimp Bites, or Chicken Quesadillas for us Texans), salads, and a variety of lunch options like a Gulf Fish Sandwich, big Burgers, Shrimp Po'boys, Philly Steak Sandwich (delicious), Club Sandwich, and more. And the prices are reasonable, not like most resorts that charge $18 for two eggs!

The Kiva Lodge has 2 bedroom 2 bath, 3 bedroom 3 bath, and 4 bed 4 bath units available for rent. Kiva Village which is adjacent to Kiva Lodge and overlooks a lake and the 18th hole has 2, 3, and 4 bedroom condos for rent and there is also a wide variety of vacation beach houses if you want to be on the beach. The beach houses range from 1 bedroom to 7 bedroom homes with up 7 baths right on the beach with stunning views of the Gulf of Mexico.

Kiva Lodge is a great place to stay if you want to play the Kiva Dunes Golf Course or any of the other golf courses in the Gulf Shores area. We spent a week in Gulf Shores and there are lots of good choices for golf - here is a link Beach in front of the Hangout Beach Barto our reviews of several other Gulf Shores courses.

In addition to some excellent courses there are lots of other fun things to see and do in and around Gulf Shores, some of which include:

  • plenty of options for shopping
  • fun attractions and things to do like a zoo, deep sea fishing, biking and hiking, museums, eco tours, parasailing, wave runner rentals, historical sites, and lots more
