Inks Lake Hatchery

Directions to Office: The fish hatchery is located about 12 miles W of Burnet, Texas, off Park Road #4.
Primary Function: Produces one million channel catfish, largemouth bass, striped bass, and rainbow trout annually for stocking in Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, Texas, and Oklahoma. Primary distribution is to waters on Federal lands for restoration objectives.
Habitat: At Inks Dam NFH there are 27 earthen ponds ranging in size from .25 acres to 1.5 acres with a total of 25 surface acres of water. The hatchery consists of 85 acres of narrow bench land along the Colorado River. The surrounding country is hilly and is covered with cedar, oak, and mesquite trees.
Recreation and Education: Waterfowl and shorebird observation, study, and photography. There is a fishing pier and a Visitor Center with interpretive signs.
Special Note: The Hatchery is located within 5 miles of two tourist attractions -- Inks Lake State Park and Longhorn Caverns. There are abundant wildflowers in spring months and water recreational opportunities in the Highland Lakes area throughout the summer.
