A Fun and Enjoyable Stay at Alhonna Resort & Marina

As part of a fun filled six-day visit to Lake of the Ozarks we spent a couple nights at Alhonna Resort & Marina in Lake Ozark, Missouri.  We chose to stay at Alhonna Resort for several reasons, some of which include:

  • Alhonna ResortThe owners of Alhonna Resort, the Gross family, have been providing family fun for over 35 years and Alhonna Resort is one of the few remaining family owned and operated resorts on Lake of the Ozarks
  • The Resort has boat rentals within a minute walk from our condo
  • They offer several lodging options, most of which are large, fully equipped, and on the shore of Lake of the Ozarks
  • It’s a short walk to the restaurant serving down-home meals
  • The outdoor and indoor pool, the sandy beach, and the swimming platform are also within a very short walk
  • As fans of the Netflix drama, Ozark, we had to stay at the place that the creator of Ozark based the Blue Cat Lodge on

Lodging at Alhonna Resort & Marina

Sunset at Alhonna ResortShortly after arriving at Alhonna Resort and after being warmly welcomed to the Resort, my wife and I were sitting on our deck overlooking Lake of the Ozarks and viewing a beautiful sunse – it just doesn’t get much better than that.

Alhonna Resort offers 60 lakeside units that range from motel-type rooms to four-bedroom condos and cabins with full kitchens, large decks or patios, and BBQ grills.  The lodging options are designed to accommodate your family size and budget and they include:

  • Motel type rooms with full bath, mini fridge, and microwave plus double beds or a queen with a daybed
  • One bedroom cottages with wood burning fireplaces,  full kitchens with microwave Lodging at Alhonna Resortand dishwasher, full baths with a tub and shower, a king size bed, and a private deck
  • One bedroom apartments with full kitchens and great views of the lake and several sleeping options including king or queen or double beds and one apartment with a loft
  • Two bedroom apartment style accommodations ranging from economy to deluxe units with upgraded furnishings, king size beds, full baths and full kitchens
  • Three bedroom cottages (also in economy to deluxe) with some combination of one or two floors, views of the lake, wood burning fireplaces, full kitchens, and more
  • Four bedroom standard to deluxe one or two story cottages (up to 1500 square feet)  with 4 king beds, complete kitchens with microwaves and dishwashers, 3 full size baths, and decks with superb views of the Lake of the Ozarks

We stayed in a 3 bedroom 900 square foot cottage with a large front porch under the trees and a Weber grill; a full  kitchen including a , dining table with 6 chairs; and a living area with a leather sofa, matching love seat, coffee table, sofa table, chair with ottoman, two side chairs, four end  tables, and a daybed.  The kitchen includes a refrigerator, microwave, dishwasher, oven and all the equipment that you need to make a meal. There is a back patio and deck that has a beautiful view of the lake and a small table with 4 chairs.  We had 2 bedrooms with queen beds, end tables, bureau with drawers and mirror and a bathroom with a tub/shower combo and a single sink. Our cottage had a lockout with one room with a bathroom  and a private entrance that we could have unlocked to use as a third bedroom.  The cottage was a throwback to the halcyon days of the small resorts at the Lake of the Ozarks and we found the cottage very comfortable and clean with everything we needed for a fun few days.  Parking was just outside our front door.

Alhonna Resort & Marina Amenities

I think the popularity of Alhonna Resort is based on the fact that it’s a fantastic place for people to relax, enjoy the lake and their family and friends, fish, and take advantage of the Resort's amenities, some of which include:

  • Bass Boat for rentTo catch the big ones, fisherman can rent a 17' bass boat with a 90 to 115 HP engine that holds 3 passengers and has  2 bass seats, fish finder, live well and foot operated trolling motor. Or, you can rent the 21' fishing pontoon for up to 6 – the office offers basic tackle, fishing licenses, and bait (minnows and worms) are available
  • Fisherman will love the boat slips with lots of fish hanging around and the enclosed fishing dock with wood burning stoves for winter fishing plus conveniently located cleaning stations - the docks are excellent for fishing because of the sunken brush which attracts crappie, bluegill, walleye, bass, and catfish
  • Indoor pool at Alhonna Resort
A large sandy beach and 2 carpeted swim docks safely anchored on the cove side of the lake are perfect for enjoying the lake
  • To take advantage of all that Lake of the Ozarks has to offer, Alhonna Resort rents a 25' pontoon that will accommodate 10 passengers and a 27' pontoon boat will hold up to 12 people
  • If you bring your own boat there are two concrete boat ramps and overnight guest boat slips available
  • At the marina you can rent paddleboards, single and double kayaks, a paddle boat, skis or tubes
  • Everyone will love the outdoor pool and kiddie pool overlooking the lake or the large indoor heated  pool with two hot tubs
  • The covered pavilion and lakeside fire pits are perfect for events and parties or just sitting around chatting

Our Fun Activities During a Stay at Alhonna Resort

House on Lake of the OzarksAfter a huge delicious breakfast at Bobber's we walked down to the Marina and rented one of the 2018 Lowes tritoon pontoon boats and explored some of the 1150 miles of shoreline of Lake of the Ozarks.  The boat was in perfect condition, fast enough that we could have wake boarded or tubed behind it, and the seating arrangement was outstanding and very comfortable.  The bimini kept us cool and prevented my bald head from getting sunburned.  And we had a fun day on the lake (beautiful huge homes, lots of boats, and fun lakeside restaurants) – click on this link to read about cruising on Lake of the Ozarks.

For dinner one night, we enjoyed a huge, tasty Italian dinner at Lil’ Rizzos - we were told by a couple people that we had to have the Chicken Speidini which is a lightly breaded, marinated chicken breast, charbroiled and topped with a garlic sauce and served over angel hair pasta with a side of lemon wedges - we split it and still couldn't eat it all. After dinner we stopped by H. Toads Bar & Grill for some live music.

Early the next morning we set off for a breakfast at Bear Creek Valley Golf Club’s restaurant which has a reputation of having the best eggs benedict in the area.  Wow, they were fantastic and it was fun sitting on the deck enjoying breakfast and watching the golfers tee off on the first hole at Bear Creek Valley Golf Club.  After watching the golfers tee off and try to carry the lake on the first hole at Bear Creek Valley Golf Club, I knew I was in trouble and that my round of golf was not going to start well.

First Hole at Bear Creek ValleySure enough, on the first tee I drove two balls into the lake to a loud round of applause from the people sitting on the deck eating breakfast.  Red faced, I teed it up again and just barely cleared the lake and then rolled into the trees – I’m not sure my fans saw that because I didn't get a second round of applause.  My round got better as the day went on and we loved playing this fantastic course.  Read our review of Bear Creek Valley Golf Club to learn more.  What a morning – delicious eggs benedict, perfect weather, and an excellent golf course. By the way, if you're a golfer we can highly recommend the Lake of the Ozarks Golf Trail - we played several of the 13 courses on the trail and loved them all!

After lunch we headed to the patio at Shawnee Bluff Winery for some appetizers.  What a perfect way to spend the rest of the afternoon – a beautiful view sitting on a deck on a cliff high above Lake of the Ozarks, an outstanding Sangria slush, two excellent guitar players, and perfect weather.  Hard to beat all of that – my only wish was that I had brought my swimming suit so I could have enjoyed enjoy the pool!

Before turning in, we dropped in at Bobber’s Lounge for a game of pool, and watching a lively mix of Alhonna Resort guests. The next morning we set off for our last 3 days of our Lake of the Ozarks vacation.   We really enjoyed the hospitality at Alhonna Resort & Marina and hope to come back again soon.  Click on our Lake of the Ozarks Vacation article to read about the rest of the trip.
