Mossy Oaks and Old Waverly Stay & Play

For the last two days of our wonderful Mississippi Golf Vacation we headed to West Point, Mississippi for a stay and play at Mossy Oaks Golf Club and a round of golf on Mossy Oak and Old Waverly. Wow - what a fantastic couple of days - the golf courses were outstanding, the stay and play lodging was comfortable, the dining was scrumptious, and the Southern Hospitality was infectious!

The Mossy Oak and Old Waverly courses and facilities are the result of the vision of the George and Marcia Bryan Family, who sought to create a world-class destination for golf and hospitality in the heart of the Mississippi Black Prairie. From our perspective they exceeded that goal and if you're a golfer you need to add Mossy Oak and Old Waverly to your golf destination bucket list and here's just a few reasons why we say this:

  • Mossy Oak Golf Courseboth courses are spectacular and very different from each other - one is the epitome of a links style course and the other is a beautiful parkland style course - but common to both is an excellent layout, perfect conditions from tee to cup, and some outstanding golf holes
  • you can enjoy a wide variety of very comfortable stay and play lodging options ranging from cottages overlooking a lake or the fairway to four bedroom luxury villas
  • a beautiful club house has delicious dining options, luxury locker rooms, a great bar, and lots more
  • you'll find unrivaled Southern hospitality

And we're not the only ones saying that these two courses are outstanding. Both courses have received a number of awards and accolades, some of which include: Golf Digest's #2 Golf Course in Mississippi (Old Waverly), Golf Digest's #3 Best New Course in the US (Mossy Oak) and recognition among Golfweek's Top-100 Modern Courses in the US, 2018 (Mossy Oak).

Mossy Oak Golf Course

Mossy Oak Golf Course opened in 2016 to critical acclaim and it is a unique collaboration between the George and Marcia Bryan Family , designer Gil Hanse, and Mossy Oak which is an outdoor lifestyle company and pioneer in preserving natural habitats across the US. The vision for Mossy Oak Golf was to create a memorable, world-class golf experience that brings golfers closer to nature and celebrates the local Mississippi Black Prairie Habitat.

Mossy Oak Golf Course

Gil Hanse, the world's leading minimalist golf course architect went to great lengths to craft a pure golf experience at Mossy Oak that maintains and celebrates the local Mississippi Black Prairie habitat. He created a masterpiece with a soft footprint on the landscape that accents the native plant species to create a full-sensory golf experience that immerses players in the outdoors - it's called "Nature's Golf." What a fantastic golf course that Golfweek named in their Top-100 Modern Courses in the US in 2018 and Golf Digest rated it #3 Best New Course in the US. Old Waverly Golf Course

Old Waverly Golf CourseJust down the road from Mossy Oak is Old Waverly which is a truly unique private club that can be played if you are a guest in one of the stay and play lodging options at Mossy Oak or Old Waverly. The course opened in 1988 and was designed by U.S. Open winner Jerry Pate and course designer Bob Cupp who carved 18 spectacular holes out of 360 acres of pasture on the site of the historic Waverly Mansion. They did a superior job of embracing and leveraging the natural beauty of the surrounding countryside.

You'll know you're in for a special treat as you drive down a beautiful canopy of trees lining the entrance to the Clubhouse and you'll be struck by the grandeur of the antebellum style Clubhouse and the allure of the surrounding well maintained and landscaped grounds.

Old Waverly Gof Course

Some of what makes Old Waverly special includes: lakes and towering old trees; stately southern mansions along some of the fairways; meticulously maintained Champion greens; several risk reward opportunities; plenty of strategically placed bunkers; near perfect tree lined fairways bordered by lakes, trees, streams, and bunkers; several unique and really fun holes that can test your game and place a premium on accuracy and shot making. Breakfast at Old Waverly Golf CourseSunset at Old Waverly Golf CourseDuring our stay we enjoyed two absolutely delicious dinners and great breakfast buffets with biscuits and gravy, fresh fruit, scrambled eggs, breakfast potatoes and of course delicious Bryan Foods bacon. One of our dinners was on the Terrace with a stunning view of the lake, 18th green, and some large homes. The sunset over the lake was magnificent and the open air fireplace was a cozy way to enjoy the cool evening. Service was superb and the epitome of Southern Hospitality - always smiling, very polite and friendly, and willing to go out of their way to make sure your stay and meal were enjoyable.
