Sandia Resort & Casino Review

"Close to home....Far from ordinary!" is the slogan for Sandia Resort & Casino which is very close to the Albuquerque airport, in the heart of the Sandia Mountains, and under the shadow of the legendary majestic Sandia Mountains. Far from ordinary is right - as we walked into to Sandia Resort we couldn't help but be impressed with the bigger than life size Indian sculpture at the entrance and several other beautiful sculptures as you walk into the massive foyer which is two stories tall, decorated with some impressive Native American art, and on one end it opens into the sights and sounds of the Sandia Casino and the other end has massive windows overlooking a beautiful pool area, a couple holes of the Sandia Golf Course with a water fall and two water fountains, and the stately Sandia Mountains rising out of the desert. Wow, we immediately knew that we were in for a special treat. And it only got better - a fantastic suite, great food, a huge casino, lots of amenities, reasonable prices, and a championship top rated golf course! How can you beat all of that? Sandia Resort & Casino is clearly one of the best New Mexico Resorts and this review of Sandia Resort & Casino will tell you why we think that's the case.

Sandia Resort and the 18th hole

The Sandia Resort and Casino is one of the Resorts on the Santa Fe Golf Trail offering an excellent stay and play package, so it was a no brainer for us to schedule at least one night stay during our week in New Mexico playing the Santa Fe Golf Trail. As impressive as the resort is, the Sandia Golf Course is equally as impressive. When you step outside on the deck of the well equipped pro shop, you're overlooking the 18th hole with a lush sweeping downhill fairway leading to a large green bordered by a lake with a water fountain and stunning cascading waterfall - oh, and the hole is framed on one end by the Sandia Resort pool and on the other end by the Sandia Mountains. We couldn't wait to play this magnificent looking hole.

Turns out that Sandia Golf Course is more than just it's pretty face of the 18th hole - the entire course is meticulously maintained and landscaped, the fairways are lush and thick, the greens are perfect, the views are majestic, and there are several very fun and challenging holes. Read our review of Sandia Golf Club to learn more about why you need to find some time to play this fantastic golf course. View from our window at Sandia Resort & Casino

Speaking of perfect 10s, when we opened the door to our room on the 7th floor at Sandia Resort and Casino our jaws dropped and several wows flowed over our lips - from our door we were looking into a large living area that was framed with a huge floor to ceiling window with an unbelievable view of the pool, 18th hole with it's waterfall and fountain, and the sun setting on the Sandia Mountains. We immediately pulled up a couple soft chairs, popped a cold beer, and watched a magnificent sunset. As soon as the sunset ended, we explored the rest of our suite before heading to the hot tub to get rid of the golf kinks and get ready for tomorrow's course.

The living room of our suite had a huge flat screen, work station with a couple chairs, a powder bath off the entry, large bureau with a mini fridge and safe, and a comfy sofa with two end tables, plus a couple chairs and a coffee table - much too big and nice for us poor website folks from Cedar Creek Lake!

The bedroom at Sandia Resort & Casino

And then we found the bedroom which was equally as large with a huge king bed, another floor to ceiling window offering a stunning view, leather seat, large bureau with a huge flat screen, desk and chair, another coffee pot, plus a cushie chair to enjoy the view. Both rooms were very well decorated with upscale southwest motif.

Oh, and there was an extra large tiled bathroom with two sinks, separate tub and shower, and bronze fixtures. It was going to be hard to stay in a normal resort room after enjoying this suite. I'm still not sure how we got this room but I wasn't about to ask any questions to determine if in fact we were in the wrong room - we sure don't look like or act like the rich and famous so that wasn't it and my performance on the golf course didn't warrant such a nice suite. So we quickly unpacked in hope that when the mistake was discovered it would be too much of an effort to move us. Or maybe they heard we were writing a review and were trying to influence my thinking!

Living area in our suite at Sandia Resort & Casino

We expected to be in one of the other 228 rooms which have luxurious oversized amenities including lavish bathrooms with granite countertops and individual soaking tubs, a cinematic 32 inch Sandia Resort heated pool screen TV, high speed internet at no charge, plush furniture, pillow top beds, and unbelievable views of New Mexico's high desert, the Sandia Mountains, some of Albuquerque's skyline, and several lush green holes of the Sandia Golf Course. Any one of them would have been a real treat for us!

After playing an impressive course and enjoying the sunset from a fantastic suite, we couldn't wait to explore the rest of this outstanding and first class resort. First stop was the heated pool and salt water hot tub to get rid of the golf kinks, but more importantly to sip a Pina Colada. Wow, the Pinas were out of this world, which meant we had to try a couple more before leaving the hot tub with red wrinkled waterlogged bodies - but the Pina Coladas were well worth it! The pool area is great with a large heated pool, plenty of comfy lounge chairs and tables, private cabanas, and a bar area where you can order drinks, food, and munchies.

After all of the exercise on the golf cart, what seemed like 250 swings of various clubs, and several treks into the desert looking for golf balls plus sitting in those soft chairs watching the sunset and fetching beers, and going from the hot tub to the pool and back was enough to make anybody hungry. We quickly discovered that we had several choices for dining, so we decided on another Pina Colada. as we tried to choose one of the following to stuff our tummies:

Everything had been going our way since we arrived at Sandia Resort (a fantastic round of golf with only 7 lost balls, an unbelievable room, excellent Pina Coladas, a soothing soak in the hot tub, and a very good meal) and we were clearly on a roll so why not continue the streak rolling the dice, pulling the slots, and betting on blackjack. Sandia Resort's Casino is over 140,000 square feet of games, including more than 2,100 slots, Blackjack, Craps, Roulette, Mini Baccarat, Pai Gow Poker, Caribbean Stud Poker, Three Card Poker, Bingo, live Kino, and more. Like the rest of the Resort, the Casino is upscale and well done, but it wasn't long before we discovered that our lucky roll was over. But we had fun and entertained ourselves for a few hours before heading over to the Tlur Pa Lounge on the Casino floor for a nightcap and some live music. And we couldn't leave without checking out the electric atmosphere in the Ba Shie Sport Lounge, which has a reputation of being one of Albuquerque's Amphitheater at Sandia Resortbest sports lounges.

Wow, what a fun day and that pillow top bed was going to feel very good!

When we first pulled into Sandia Resort we couldn't help but notice the 5 huge expensive motorhomes near the entrance - something big was going on. Turns our that Santana was playing that evening in the Resort's beautiful 4000 seat outdoor amphitheater with a huge stage and the Sandia Mountains as a backdrop. Unfortunately for us, it was sold out. Maybe the Resort staff thought we were part of the music and that's why they upgraded us to that beautiful suite!

Some of the other amenities we wished we had had time to enjoy at Sandia Resort & Casino include:

Fitness center The conversational fire pit at the poolPro shop at Sandia Golf Club

Bottom line - Sandia Resort & Casino is first class all the way and well deserving of all the awards and accolades it has recieved. The service is friendly and attentive, the rooms are upscale and comfortable, the food is great, the Casino is well done, the rates aren't outrageous, and the golf course is one of the best in New Mexico. Can't get much better and we can't wait to get back!
