Snowmass Lodging

During a fun filled six day mini vacation to Snowmass we stayed in a fantastic condo at the Hayden Lodge, which is managed by Snowmass Hospitality. We arrived loaded to the hilt with clothes for a month, toys and gear of all kinds for the four grand kids, several cases of beer, some groceries, plus hiking sticks, several games, frisbees, golf clubs, and a lot more. It's a good thing that Hayden Lodge has gated and close by covered parking or it would have taken us and 16 bell hops half a day to get everything to our condo - and of course we took half of what we brought back home unused. However all the toys, games, and beer was well used. And over the next six days we enjoyed several hikes, kayaking down the Roaring Fork River, a balloon ride over the mountains, a bike ride around Aspen, golf at Aspen Golf Club, a ride up the gondola to the top of the Snowmass Mountain for a frisbee golf game, a wedding, and lots of good food.

As soon as we entered our Hayden Lodge condo we heard several "wows" as our party of nine took off exploring our home for the next 5 days! Wow, we were all impressed with the layout, the appointments, and most of all the patio and view. We were staying in a 1400 square foot three bedroom condo with three full baths, a large dining and living room, a full kitchen, and a huge "L" shaped patio at the base of Snowmass Mountain in what is called Snowmass Base Village. The patio and each of the rooms had majestic views of Snowmass Mountain which is the 32nd highest mountain (14,092 feet) in Colorado and the 3rd highest in the Elk Mountain Range. It just doesn't get much better than this.

Hayden Lodge is at the base of Snowmass' Fanny Hill (a beginner's ski run) and in the center of Snowmass Base Village. We could walk out our front door and take a few steps to:

  • The Sweet Life to over indulge on chocolate, ice cream, and other treats
  • some small specialty shops and bike rental and outdoor outfitters
  • a sand volleyball court and a Eurobungy Trampoline for kids
  • Sneaky's Tavern or Base Camp Bar & Grill for drinks, tasty grub, and live music
  • the Elk Camp Gondola for a ride to the top of Snowmass Mountain or hop on the Sky Cab Gondola for a short free ride to Snowmass Village's shops, restaurants, and more
  • drop the kids off at the Treehouse Kid's Adventure Center

Hayden Lodge Living RoomNot only did the living area have great views but it also included comfy furniture facing a stone gas fireplace and a flat screen TV. The large eight person white pine dining table was perfect for enjoying some good food as well as lively and competitive games well into the evening. And the kitchen had everything needed to cook a gourmet meal - which of course we don't have the faintest idea how to cook, but we did make spicy queso, fry some eggs, and enjoyed a tasty spaghetti dinner - who wants to cook when you are surrounded by some great Snowmass and Aspen restaurants! We also didn't want to get spoiled by all of the top of the line Viking appliances and expensive utensils that were in our Hayden Lodge condo. My wife was constantly saying "I want one of these appliances" which I must admit were much more efficient, durable, and good looking when compared to our Wal-Mart specials.

If you are a frequent renter, you know how special it is when you stay at a place with nice appointments - and Hayden Lodge is at the top of our list with some of the best including:

  • upscale appointments as well as a big flat screen TVs in each room
  • top of the line (Viking) kitchen appliances including a huge Viking refrigerator and freezer with an ice maker that really works
  • Hayden Lodge Dining Area and Kitchenrich real wood paneling, cabinets, and doors - all of the cabinet and kitchen drawers are spring loaded and gently close on their own which means my wife never had to yell at me for not closing the cabinet doors
  • quality (not cheap plastic or metal) utensils and flatware, plates, glasses plus wine goblets as well as champagne flutes, utensils, and pots and pans - all were top of the line Cuisinart appliances including a 4 slot dual control toaster that works on the first push and didn't burn a single piece of toast (a new record)
  • comfortable patio furniture including a lounge chair - all of which were not your typical plastic or hard metal outdoor furniture
  • his and hers slippers and robes - every morning we would find my wife in her robe and slippers on the patio enjoying her morning coffee, we had a hard time getting her to come in and get ready for the day
  • boot and glove warmers for skiers or winter hikers and humidifiers to put some moisture back in the dry air
  • full size washers and dryers that handle a full load of dirty clothes instead of just a couple shirts and dirty socks
  • an ironing board and powerful vacuum cleaner to pick up some of the young grand kids messes
  • full bars of soap, not those skinny small cheap things
  • efficient maid service that seems to magically appear and make the condo look like it did when we arrived
  • real towels that are thick, long, and fluffy
  • for the wine drinkers, there was a 56 bottle wine cooler - how cool is that!

Some of the other amenities that are included with a stay at Hayden Lodge include: covered gated parking, hot tub, pool table, exercise room, several coupons and specials for meals and more in Snowmass, and access to the exclusive Snowmass Club. Access to Snowmass Club alone is worth the price. The Snowmass Club has a nice pool with big umbrellas, a hot tub, kiddy pool, bar area, and an adult only area with a hot tub and pool; well appointed locker rooms with a sauna, shower, and therapeutic hot tub; ping pong table and game room; huge state of the art exercise and fitness center; great restaurant; tennis courts; and outstanding friendly service. Plus three options for some excellent food ranging from casual elegance at Sage, sumptuous barbeque at Black Saddle, or snacks and cocktails at the Daly Beach Club. Their dining options cover everything from fine dining to a laid-back environment. It's very well done and first class all the way.

But my favorite Snowmass Club amenity was their 18 hole championship golf course. The private Snowmass Club Golf Course is one of the best courses that we have played. You'll find beautiful scenery, dramatic elevation changes, huge greens, very steep and deep bunkers of all shapes and sizes, wide open but sloping and rolling fairways, dog legs, water, and much more. Plus near perfect conditions. A must play course if you're in Snowmass. Read our review of Snowmass Club Golf Course to learn more about this outstanding course. If you're a golfer, Hayden Lodge is close to several other excellent courses one of which is Aspen Golf Club about 5 minutes away. What a beautiful, fun, and memorable course. In 2010, Aspen Golf Club was rated by Golfweek Magazine as the 21st "Best US Municipal Course." Check out our Colorado Golf Course Reviews to learn about some of the best courses in Colorado.

View from the top of the Elk Creek GondolaAs I mentioned earlier, Hayden Lodge is in the center of Snowmass Base Village at the bottom of Snowmass Mountain's Fanny Hill - an absolutely perfect location for a summer or winter vacation. If you're skiing, you can grab your skis from the Hayden Lodge ski locker, walk out the front door, and up a few steps to the Village Express six person chair lift line which will get you quickly up the mountain run. Or you can carry your skis a half a block and jump on the Elk Camp Gondola for a fast warm scenic ride close to the top of the Snowmass Mountain. For summer vacations, you can rent a bike or some frisbees in the Base Village or grab your hiking stick and backpack and hop on the Elk Camp Gondola for a ride up the mountain to hike, bike, or play frisbee golf back down to Snowmass Base Village. At the top of the Gondola is a climbing wall, kids playground, cafe and huge deck, and magnificent and unbelievable views.

And talk about convenience if you have young kids, just beneath the Hayden Lodge is the Treehouse Children's Center which will keep the kids entertained for hours. Or during the summer you can walk out the Hayden Lodge's front door to play sand volleyball, let the kids bungee jump, listen to the live music in the courtyard, or have a drink or some good food on the patio with a majestic view of Snowmass Mountain. On the Thursday we were staying at Hayden Lodge, there was an outstanding live country music band (our favorite and made us Texans feel right at home) in the courtyard. Our balcony at the Hayden Lodge was a perfect place to sit in the comfy outdoor furniture and listen to the music, soak up the rays, and enjoy the breathtaking view. But we couldn't resist joining in the dancing with the band in the courtyard.

The Snowmass Base Village is also home to:

  • some bike and ski rentals and the lift ticket office
  • shops and specialty stores
  • good food, great patios, and fun nightlife at Sneakys or Base Camp Bar & Grill
  • the Sweet Shop for dessert, to satisfy the craving for sweets, or as a special treat for the kids

We seemed to frequent the Sweet Shop at least once a day, had a tasty dinner at the Base Camp Bar & Grill, enjoyed the free evening movie on the Base Camp patio, and hated for the courtyard music to end. We also rode the Sky Cab Gondola several times to take a hike on one of the Snowmass trails, enjoyed some good food, let the grand kids play on the playground, got a pedicure for the ladies, and bought a souvenir to remember the trip.

Snowmass Village is always alive with some special summer or winter events for you to enjoy. For example, during our stay on Thursday night we had a fun time at an outstanding free concert on Fanny Hill with a fun, lively, and well known Zydeco band. And on Wednesday night we enjoyed a Rodeo with bronco busting, bull riding, good BBQ, and more. On the weekend during our stay, over 1000 mountain bikers of all ages descended on Snowmass Base Camp for a series of mountain bike races up and down and round Snowmass Mountain - I couldn't believe that what looked like very sane men and women of ages ranging from 14 to 60 could rides bikes up these steep mountain trails at over 10,000' - of course they had lean and mean well sculptured and chiseled bodies which looked like Greek god and goddess statues in colorful biking outfits. Lance Armstrong actually won this race in 2009 by over two minutes!

As I mentioned, we didn't come to Snowmass to stay in our fantastic condo, but it sure felt great to come home and relax with a cold one on the patio or jump in the hot tub or get a good night's sleep in a very comfy bed. Some of the other things that we can highly recommend that you can see and do while you're in Snowmass during the summer include:

  • bike (there are plenty of rental locations) and 100's of trails within 20 minutes that range from easy paved very scenic trails to grueling technically difficult mountain bike trails - if you take the Elk Creek Gondola with your bike to the top of Snowmass Mountain you're in for a thrilling mountain bike ride down any of the 15 trails covering 40 miles of terrain - see our Biking in Snowmass and Aspen article
  • sign up with Blazing Adventures for a jeep or bike tour, go climbing, or raft/kayak any one of three rivers - we had a blast and exciting ride down the Roaring Fork River on an inflatable kayak known as a duckie - read more about this trip on Kayaking In Snowmass
  • hike any of the miles of trails ranging from short easy nature trails, to scrambling over granite boulders, to high altitude workouts - we have hiked the Rim Trail that follows a narrow ridge line offering magnificent views of Snowmass; the Nature Trail at Snowmass Village that winds up and down the hillside and through some stunning scenery; the trail to Maroon Bells; and the Grotto Trail that has an ice cave and trail along the Roaring Fork with several water falls cascading from huge granite outcroppings - check out our Hiking and Biking in Snowmass and Aspen article
  • jump off Aspen mountain in a tandem paraglider and soar with the eagles - read about our fantastic flight with Aspen Paragliding
  • go up and away in a hot air balloon with Above it All - we took an early morning flight that departed from Snowmass and flew over stunning scenery which you can see and read about in Hot Air Ballooning in Snowmass
  • taking the Snowmass or Aspen Gondolas to the top of the mountain for majestic scenery, live music, a bite to eat, 18 holes of disc golf, nature hikes, bike rides, hiking, paintball, rock wall climbing, kid bungee jumping, and more - it doesn't get any better than sitting at the top of Aspen mountain with a 360 degree view of majestic peaks and valley while you sip a cold one and listen to live bluegrass music
