South Padre Island Lodging

TraveLodge in South Padre Island During a fun filled winter vacation on South Padre Island, we had several choices for lodging and chose South Padre Travelodge for this trip. Travelodge is on the northern end of the island and it has a combination of standard hotel rooms, junior suites, and two bedroom suites. Some of the reasons we chose Travelodge is because they are close to the beach, have a pool, a good sized suite for our family of 6, and the rates are very reasonable. We didn't know it at the time, but Travelodge also has daily maid service (a must with our crew), a free continental breakfast and a happy hour with free beer and wine, and soft drinks - perfect!

We stayed in the two bedroom one bathroom suite and found it clean, comfortable, and it had everything we needed for a weeks vacation. One bedroom had two double beds, TV, and a large dresser. The master bedroom had a very comfortable king sized bed, large closet, and a armoire with drawers and a flat screen TV.

The living area was huge with a flat screen, cozy couch, and coffee table. The kitchen was also ample and had all the basics - pots, pans, coffee maker, microwave, large refrigerator, toaster, and more. There was also a table and four chairs plus a couple extra chairs at the kitchen counter.

Our suite was on the second floor and we could walk out the front door and sit in a couple lawn chairs and enjoy the view of Laguna Madre Bay. At the other end of the walkway was a large patio area with outdoor chairs and tables and a BBQ plus a narrow view to the beach. On Travelodge's private walkway to beach, which was about a block and a half away, you crossed a sports court with a tennis net, basketball hoop, and a picnic table for your fans.

Each morning, a free continental breakfast is available for guests and it includes: juice and coffee, cereal and a waffle maker, donuts, rolls, muffins, and bread. A great way to start the day. And better yet, from 5 to 7 PM, the Travelodge guests could enjoy a free happy hour with beer and wine, soft drinks, popcorn, plus chips and salsa.

Some of the other amenities include all day movie rentals at a reasonable rate, ping pong table, a fitness room with a variety of workout equipment, a heated pool and Jacuzzi, and a computer work station. WiFi is also available. Several times during the year, Travelodge sponsors fun special events in a large meeting room.

Bottom line - the Travelodge is not your top of the line resort, but it doesn't have those expensive resort prices and fees and does have comfortable and clean affordable lodging.

The owner of Travelodge also has a condo on South Padre Island and he said the next time we should try it. So we ventured down to check out his Cloud Dancer Condo. It was great - a bottom floor condo with a patio next to the condo's pool. Walk inside to a large living and dining area and a very well equipped kitchen. The Cloud Dancer has two bedrooms and one bathroom and was very clean and would be perfect for a vacation with four people or a small family. And it is just a block to the beach and a good beach bar. Plus you can walk to a very good seafood and cajun restaurant, Daddy's. You can learn more about Cloud Dancer on VRBO.
