Lady Bird Lake, Formerly Town Lake

Town Lake CanoeingWhere the city straddles the Colorado River, 2 dams mark the upstream and downstream ends of Lady Bird Lake, the focus of outdoor activity in downtown Austin. If you are planning on spending some time in Austin, make sure you visit Lady Bird Lake for hiking, walking, biking, canoeing or kayaking.

In fact there are over ten miles of flat trails that run on both sides of the lake that are excellent, walking, or biking. Here is a link to an interactive Lady Bird Lake trail map and here is a link to some things to do near the Trail. The trail around the lake is mostly flat, fairly wide, and very popular. It offers great views of the lake and the Austin skyline. Wide trails around the lakeNearby the trails are plenty of fun restaurants with excellent food, fantastic outdoor patios, and live music. A couple of our favorites which are close to the trail include: Chuy's for Mexican Food, Shady Grove for food and music on the patio, Aussie's for burgers, beer, and volleyball. If you don't have a bike, there are a couple places that you rent them that are near the trail.

Auditorium Shores on the south side of the Lake is home to many concerts and events and is perfect for some baseball, football, or soccer. You can't swim in the Lake but you can rent an electric boat, a kayak/canoe, or standup paddleboard to explore the Lake and get some exercise. There are lots of fun things to see and do around Lady Bird Lake, the most popular of which is enjoying the trails around the lake. Here are some other fun things to do near the lake:

  • Deep Eddy Pool - a historic, man-made swimming pool which is the oldest swimming pool in Texas and has a bathhouse built during the Depression-era, by the Works Progress Administration. The pool began as a swimming hole in the Colorado River, became a resort in the 1920s, and is today a popular swimming pool operated by the City of Austin.Barton Springs Pool
  • Barton Creek - a true urban treasure with that is 8 miles long and 809 acres of lush vegetation, sheer cliff walls, swimming areas, and great trails
  • Zilker Park - regarded as Austin's most beloved park you can enjoy a miniature train ride, lots of special events and annual activities, volleyball courts, a nine-hole disc golf course, and two multi-use fields.
  • Barton Springs Pool - one of the best known swimming holes in Texas is a natural spring-fed pool with a year-round average temperature of 68 degrees
  • UMLAUF Sculpture Gardens - features the world famous Farrah Fawcet sculptures that made Charles UMLAUF well known in the mid seventies
  • Botanical Gardens, Austin Area Garden Center, and The Zilker Hillside Theater all in this part of the park

There are a few hotels that are on the shoreline of the Lake and from Lady Bird Lake you can easily walk or bike to lots of great restaurants, shops, and entertainment districts. See our Austin Page for more to do in Austin.
