A Fun Escape From COVID-19 Isolation
Like everyone else in Texas, we had been cooped up in the house for over two months thanks to COVID-19. When the COVID-19 restrictions loosened up, we where excited and ready to hit the road again for some camping, golfing, and live music! It didn't take long to load the RV with clothes, the golf clubs, a couple cases of beer, and head to Kerrville to check out an RV resort, enjoy some food, and play some golf!.
If you've never been to Kerrville, you need to plan a trip. It's a small (22,000 population) laid back city with lots to see and do, some great camping, fantastic hike and bike trails, museums, good restaurants, golf courses, the Guadalupe River, and more plus the annual Kerrville Folk Festival.
We wanted to check out Yogi Bear's Jellystone Guadalupe River RV Resort in Kerrville because we heard that it was an excellent RV resort and would be a fun place to take the grand kids later this summer. Wow, what an impressive RV Resort that sits on 72 acres with over 300 feet of shoreline along the beautiful Guadalupe River. Jellystone Guadalupe River RV Resort has a wide variety of fully furnished cabins that will sleep up to 12 and over 150 full hook-up RV sites. But what makes this RV resort special is all of the amenities, some of which include: a water park with fast slides, water cannons, fountains, and lots more; three outdoor pools plus an indoor heated pool, hot tub, and sauna; 18 hole mini golf course; basketball and volleyball courts; jumping pillows and pads; an arcade; laser tag, Gaga ball, ping pong, horseshoes, and other fun things kids will enjoy plus lots of planned activities. We enjoyed the cold beer and pizza on the deck of the River Rock Pub & Pizzeria - when was the last time you visited an RV park with a pub? Read our review of Jellystone Guadalupe River RV Resort to learn more about why we rated this RV at the top of our list of the Best RV Resorts in Texas!
Several places in Kerrville were still closed thanks to COVID-19 but we enjoyed:
- a local brew and some appetizers at Wilson's Ice House - in memory of Tom Hanks and Wilson in Cast Away
- a very good chicken fried steak overlooking the Guadalupe River at Billy Gene's restaurant
- a bike ride along the Guadalupe River
- margaritas and some tasty Mexican food at Taqueria Jalisco
It's hard to play good golf after a few margaritas, but we did it and enjoyed playing Comanche Trace Golf Club in Kerrville. They have three excellent and very different nine hole courses - The Hills, The Valley, and The Creeks. The name of each nine gives you an idea of what to expect. The conditions are near perfect, the scenery is stunning, and the layout is fun and fair but challenging. Check out our review and rating of Comanche Trace's the Hills Nine, the Valley Nine, and the Creeks Nine - two of the three nines made Texas Outside's list of the Best Private Golf Courses in Texas! Comanche Trace is a private golf course but they allow reciprocal play and they have a great stay and play package.
All to soon it was time to head home, restock the camper with food and beer, and head north to Cresson, Texas for the first music festival of the year! Thanks to COVID-19 three of our favorite music festival were cancelled and I can't tell you how excited we were when we heard about the first ever Newellfest! The festival was organized in less than 30 days and it was a tribute to all of the musicians with all of the proceeds going to the performing artists. The fans were great and the musicians were as excited to get out and start playing music as we were to see them! Read more about this fun two day music festival - we hope it becomes an annual event!
Before heading home on Sunday, we played a round of golf at Cleburne Golf Links which plays along the shoreline of Pat Cleburne Lake in (you guessed it) Cleburne. This is a true links style golf course with wide open fairways, native brush that will devour your golf ball (it ate five of mine!), water on nine holes, fourteen small nasty bunkers, and big greens. Conditions weren't the best but it was great to get out and play golf again! Here's a link to our review and rating of Cleburne Golf Links.
All too soon we were back at home planning our next weekend adventure! It sure was good to escape COVID-19 isolation!
