Escape To The Hills & Pines of Texas

Best Little Cabin in TexasThere is a cabin, tucked away on top of a hill in Central Texas, that peeks out through lost pines—where birds call to each other as they busily take care of their daily chores, and where the breeze whispers its hello through the open windows.  This is the place for peace and tranquility— secluded enough for Austin dwellers to get away from it all and retreat back to nature.

We were looking for a remote get-a-way and found what looked like the perfect place to escape for the weekend - the Best Little Cabin in Texas.

Given that it is wildflower season in Texas and the weather was so beautiful, we were lucky to find a vacancy in March. The owners, Dianne and Terry James, were gracious hosts answering all of our questions over email and providing clear directions from Austin before our weekend visit.

The cabin is very spacious and includes: two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a fully outfitted kitchen, laundry, a comfortable living room and a deck that stretches the length of the cabin, overlooking Smithville in the distance.

There is history here.  It’s not called The Best Little Cabin in Texas for nothing—the bed in the main bedroom once belonged to the madam of the original Chicken Ranch in La Grange.  There is memorabilia around, telling the story of the famous Chicken Ranch, which provides a quirky, yet romantic touch.  Although the original name was fitting, we preferred to call it the Frog Cabin, as the trinkets throughout the cabin pay humorous homage to the Houston Toad. There are many touches within the cabin and beyond, that reflect Dianne and Terry’s eclectic tastes.

With so many choices of things to do, I must confess that sitting on the back stairs as the afternoon faded, a glass of wine in hand, was my favorite moment at the cabin.  We simply sat and watched the birds finish their chores for the day, listening as they sang their song of choice.  The wind in the trees and the songs of the birds were truly lovely, but my favorite sounds were my husband’s sighs as we relaxed at the Best Little Cabin in Texas.
