Brief Overview:
Cedar Breaks Park is a Corp of Engineer Park situated on a bluff overlooking Lake Georgetown. This is a small but pretty park with 90% of the spacious sites shaded thanks to lots of mesquite trees. Cedar Breaks is a clean and well maintained park with gated security -- make sure you get in before 10 PM. The bad news with this park is that the lake is not easily accessible from the campsites because the sites sit up on a steep rocky bluff above the water - so come here for the views, not for on-the-water camping. You can read more about Lake Georgetown on the Lakes Section of Texas Outside where you will find a review and rating of Lake Georgetown, a lake map, and more.
Amenities and Fun Things To Do:
Cedar Breaks Park has 64 campsites with water and electricity, most of which are level, well treed, have a large covered picnic table, grill, and fire pit. Sites 18 to 46 sit on the bluff and have great views of the Lake but no easy access to the Lake. The Park also has a day use area with 41 picnic tables, dump station, 4 lane boat ramp (very steep) with ample trailer parking, and two fishing docks which were high and dry during the drought of 2006 when the water level was down 25 feet or more. You come to Cedar Breaks to camp (games, bonding with the kids/wife/family, marshmallow roasting, eating, and chillin'), fish, and enjoy the view of the lake. If you are up for a hike, the park does have access to the San Gabriel River Trail via the Goodwater Loop which winds 26 miles around the Lake. The part of the trail that we covered was an easy hike and relatively flat.
A Typical Texas Outsider Day:
We start the day with a hearty breakfast, enjoying the view of the lake as we eat. Then launch the boat to cruise the Lake looking for perfect water to ski. Lake Georgetown is only 1300 acres, so you can cruise the lake in less than 30 minutes. It wasn't hard to find smooth water by the dam or anyplace on the lake because there was no wind and no boat traffic. After skiing for awhile, we watched some kids jump from the bluffs near the dam, then anchored near another bluff for lunch, swimming, and games. Lake Georgetown is completely undeveloped except for the Corp of Engineer Parks, so cruising isn't the best.
Cool Nearby Activities:
Georgetown is 15 minutes away and Austin is 28 miles south -- both have plenty to see and do. Sun City is 5 minutes from the park and they have a couple great golf courses. You can learn more about the golf courses (location, rating, reviews, etc.) by going to the Texas Outside Golfing Section and what to do in Austin or Georgetown in the Discover Texas section of Texas Outside.

Texas Outside uses a tough rating scale and it’s difficult for a campground to get a “10”. Each park is rated on:
- Scenic Beauty: a campground that is flat with no trees or character gets a “1” and hills, lots of trees, beautiful lake site, and lush ground cover gets a “10”
- Park Condition: the cleaner, well kept, and maintained campgrounds receive high scores
- Amenities: we are looking for lots of amenities like restrooms, dump stations, playgrounds, boat ramps, shelters, concession stand, rental toys, and more.
- Campsites: low scores are given for sites that are right next to each other (good for getting to know your neighbors, but not what we’re looking for when we’re camping); have no lantern holder, no water or electricity, no fire pit, no grill, or no picnic table (or it’s rotten wood); have no trees and no view; the ground cover is crushed rock (my bare feet hate that stuff!); and they require a lot of work to get your rig level.
- Things To Do: Bonus points are given for campgrounds that offer lots of fun things to do at the park or very nearby – this includes: biking, hiking, climbing, boating, entertainment, golf, swimming, fishing, volleyball, horseshoes, and more
