Date Played: August 26, 2007
Front Nine Rating: 8.0 Stars Back Nine Rating: 8.0 Stars Approximate Weekend Price Range: $15.00 to $23.00 Brief Description: Buncombe Creek, in Willis Oklahoma is about 5 miles north of Lake Texoma. This nine hole par 36 family owned course has been carved out of the family's peanut and cattle farm. In fact, the pro shop was the peanut dryer shed. There are three sets of tee boxes and from the back tees the course is 3024 yards. The first couple holes are flat, treeless, and fairly straight, but after that the course gets more challenging, very scenic, and fun to play as the terrain changes to rolling hills and trees. The fairways were in very good shape when we played, however the fairways were thick and dense which meant that you got little roll on your drives and long iron shots. The greens were also in good shape - they also could have been cut a little closer. The greens seemed smaller than normal, requiring a target approach shot. The greens seemed to roll true and the undulation needs to be studied closely. Dog legs, rolling hills, and some very tight spots make this a very fun and somewhat challenging course to play. It's worth going out of your way to play the course and the value is fantastic. This is a great course to bring the family for an enjoyable, no pressure round of golf.

Here's How Texas Outside Determines the Scorecard RatingThe Texas Outside rating scale ranges from 1 to 10 – a perfect 10 course would be something like this: links along a cliff overlooking the Pacific ocean and bordered by tall trees; lush fairways on rolling hills with lots of natural hazards; water (which is crystal clear) on most of the holes; immaculate greens (but they are undulating and tough); lots of variety and character (each hole is completely different and includes blind shots, elevation changes, doglegs, and significant challenges); perfectly manicured traps with the whitest and prettiest sand you’ve ever seen; a nice club house with great food and a 19th hole; a GPS; plenty of beverage carts or your own cooler and ice; and it only costs $40 bucks! What this means is that you probably won’t find any 10s in Texas – try Cabo San Lucas, Pebble Beach, or some of the Hawaii courses!
All of the above determines the overall score for the golf course. In other words, we like courses that are pretty, fun, very challenging with a lot of variety, and fairways and greens in excellent condition – all for $40. We also tend to play the courses that are affordable for the masses, which means in the $30 to $80 range. We rate hard and we haven’t found a 10 in Texas yet – don’t worry we haven’t given up and we’re still looking.
