Shopping and Sleeping in Salado

Salado is a quaint little artsy village that is fun to spend a couple days exploring, so here is a plan for you to shop and sleep in Salado.

Check into The Inn at Salado (a very nice B&B in a 1872 historical house on Main Street with 12 well appointed rooms in the heart of shopper's paradise) or Stonecreek Settlement which is a unique collection of early Texas and German Sunday Haus style cottages tucked into a native landscape containing water ponds and walking trails.

Have dinner at The Salado Mansion (an excellent Tex-Mex restaurant in an 1857 historic home perched on a hill overlooking Main Street - 254 947-5157) or The Range at the Barton House - an elegant eatery offering some fresh and adventurous fare in the historic Barton House (254 947-3828)

Here are some options for Saturday:

  • shoppers - get your money and credit cards and start walking the streets of Salado in search of the perfect antiques, clothiers, art, or Mill Creek Golf Courseother crafts in the multitude of shops that line Main Street - a shoppers paradise
  • while the shoppers are shopping, the golfers can be golfing and enjoying 27 holes of some very good golf at Mill Creek Golf Course
  • if you are not a shopper or a golfer, then why not:
    • try your luck at fishing on one of three nearby lakes - Stillhouse Hollow, Belton, or Georgetown - Holding The Line Guide Service will help you land a big one and they will even pick you up at your B&B or wherever you are staying, how's that for service? Better yet, print and hand them their coupon on this page and you'll save $20!
    • or rent a pontoon boat, ski deck boat, or jon boat at C&D Watercraft rentals on Stillhouse Hollow Lake (254 223-1056) and cruise around the lake, swim, or fish. If you are certified, then contact Scuba Divers Paradise about diving the clear waters of Stillhouse Hollow Lake or you can rent a pedal boat, canoe, or kayak from them.
  • take a break from shopping and golfing to admire your purchases or reminisce on how you could have scored better and stop in at Browning's Courtyard Cafe (254 947-8666) for soup, salad, a classic sandwich on fresh baked bread, and fabulous homemade deserts.
  • check the watch and your energy level after lunch, do you still have time in the afternoon for more shopping or another nine holes of golf? If not, then chill out and get ready for dinner and a fun evening
  • if you are not tired of shopping, fishing, or golfing and looking for some other fun activities than try any of the activities mentioned for Sunday

Saturday night you should have dinner at Inn on the Creek. They serve an excellent 4 course gourmet meal in a historic house and make sure youDinner setting a Inn on the Creek get there early to have drinks on the porch and relax to the tranquil sounds of Salado Creek - seating is very limited and you need to call in advance for reservations (254 947-5554). You have lots of other choices if the price or menu at Inn on the Creek doesn't meet what you are looking - try Stagecoach Inn for some down home country cooking.

After dinner you attend Salado Silver Spur Theater for some a move, live music, or vaudeville or Tablerock Amphitheater for a play or other special events. Check their websites, find an event that sounds interesting, and plan that weekend for your escape to Salado.

Get up - it's Sunday and time for some more fun and exercise. You could redo any of the above and go shopping, golfing, or fishing again or you can try some new activities like:

  • pick up a sandwich or some fried chicken or have Browning's Courtyard Cafe pack you a lunch and then drive out to Stillhouse Hollow Lake (10 Chalk Ridge Falls Parkminutes west of Salado) and have a picnic by the dam. Before or after lunch hike the 5 miles of trails at Chalk Ridge Falls Park which is on the south end of the Stillhouse Hollow Lake dam. The Park has some excellent trails along creeks with lush foliage, waterfalls, foot bridges, and even a suspension bridge.
  • rent a pontoon boat, kayak, jon boat, or ski deck boat or scuba dive in the clear deep waters of Stillhouse Hollow Lake - find some rentals here
  • if you want some much longer and tougher hikes drive a little over 20 minutes west to Dana Peak Park on the north west side of Stillhouse Hollow Lake - they have mountain bike, equestrian, and hiking trails with awesome views, fossils, and more.   • ride the road bikes around the Salado area - see a trail map
  • after all that biking and hiking, treat your self to a massage at Serenity Spa of Salado
  • check out the Salado or Wildfire Ranch websites for any special events
