La Cantera Resort Golf Stay & Play Review
If you are looking for a Texas Golf Stay & Play destination for you and your buddies or family, then you need to consider booking a room and a tee time at in San Antonio. And here's just a few reasons why we can highly recommend the Golf Stay & Play at La Cantera:
  • View of one hole and the resortthe two 18 hole award winning golf courses are each very different and two of the best golf courses in Texas
  • you'll find a variety of comfortable accommodations that will house a single or a group of 8
  • after burning lots of calories on the course you can reload at any of the 5 different restaurants
  • to work out the kinks and golfing frustrations you can get a relaxing massage
  • La Cantera won Golf Magazine's Premier Golf Resorts 2014-2015 Silver Award and AAA's "Four Diamond Award Resort" designation
  • and after 18 holes in the hot Texas weather, you'll love the two infinity pools, each of which has it's own bar with excellent margaritas

One of the pools at La Cantera ResortIn 2013 Destination Hotels, who has a distinctive and diverse collection of luxury and upscale resorts and hotels, acquired La Cantera Resort and immediately invested over $100 million in improvements and renovations. They built two new unique restaurants, a stunning pool complex with two infinity pools with unbelievable views, redid the lobby area, added a beautiful new courtyard, started building a 17,000 square foot spa and fitness center, and have made a number of other improvements, with more on the way. The courses were already perfect and they were left alone - thank God!

Golf at La Cantera Resort

The Clubhouse and 18th and 9th hole at the Palmer CourseEach of the two courses at La Cantera, the Palmer and Resort Course, are very unique and different from the other course. But common to both courses are superb conditions from the tee box to the cup, lots of challenges to keep you on your game, unmatched scenic vistas, some wide open let-er-rip fairways, plenty of variety with no two holes being similar, good rates for such a quality course, an excellent pace of play, plenty of very fun holes, first class service, and upscale well done facilities - and a very memorable round of golf. The pro shops are well stocked with everything you need to look good and play well, the grill at each of the clubhouses serves some great food, and the bar is perfect for drinks and settling your bets or reminiscing about how you played. Each of the courses have won several awards and accolades some of which include:

  • One of the Palmer Course golf holesGolf Week named both courses in their list of "Best Courses You Can Play" in 2015
  • Golf Magazine named both courses in "Most Beautiful Courses in Texas"
  • The Resort Course was named the "9th Best Golf Course in Texas" by Golf Advisor and "#1 Luxury Golf Course in San Antonio" by Avid Golfer Magazine
  • The Palmer Course was ranked the #2 Luxury Golf Course in San Antonio by Avid Golfer and #2 in Texas by Golf Advisor
  • Texas Outside listed both courses in the Best Resort Courses and the Best of the Best in Texas and the 18th hole made the list of the Most Beautiful Holes in Texas

The Palmer Course, one of Arnold Palmers' signature courses, is a 10 minute drive from the Resort - but you can see a lot of the golf holes and what you're going to be up against as you sip a margarita in the infinity pool. The Palmer Course plays up some of the tallest hills in the San Antonio area, along a ridge line with views for what seems like hundreds of miles, and then back down to one of the best golf holes in Texas - #18 is a par 4 with a big uphill blind shot that will take you down a roller coaster fairway to a green surrounded by 5 bunkers, a hillside, and a pond with rock cascading waterfalls. Along the way to #18 you'll encounter lots of uphill as well as downhill shots from elevated tee boxes, a beautiful par 3 over a lake, lots of deer and wildlife, 5 blind shots, some challenging rough, more huge bunkers than most courses, and some really fun holes to try and par! Read our review of the Palmer Course, which we rated 9.7 out of 10, to learn more.

The Resort Course was designed by Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish and was home of the PGA tour's Valero Texas Open. The Resort Course is about 6 to 8 strokes easier than Palmer, has lots of ups and downs and elevated tee boxes, huge bunkers some of which are so big they have several grass islands, excellent putting surfaces but well guarded greens, wide open fairways that you don't want to miss or you're in some deep rough or most likely lost in the trees and brush, and some really enjoyable holes to play. One of our favorite holes on the Resort Course is #7 which has a dramatically elevated tee box high on a limestone bluff with a view of Fiesta Texas and the surrounding area for miles and miles, a tee shot that needs to avoid 3 fairway bunkers in you landing zone (one left, one right, and one in the middle of the fairway), and an approach shot to a challenging green with huge green and a pond on the right front - and the screams you'll hear aren't for your putting, they are coming from the thrilling ride on the Fiesta Texas Roller coaster just a short par three in back of the green. Here is a link to our review of the Resort Course which we rated 9.5.
